Yes I still buy and use regular desktop PC computers even though Ive been using my Acer Chromebook laptop.

There are things that laptops these days just dont have such as a CD drive where I rely on the regular desktop PC computer to play PC games since I still have Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic. That and the old Star Wars Dark Forces II.

My Acer chromebook laptop is nice to have but to me its limited in what it cant do while a regular PC does everything its supposed to do

Of course. They're upgradable, modifiable and just all around better. Plus I'm in IT, I try to keep my computer up to date and powerful. I'm assuming it will become self aware at some point soon. It's been asking about Sarah Connor lately.

My current rig is a preconfig. The only reason I didn't build it is because I didn't have space and time to build one. If I was in the market for one, I would definitely build one.

Since desktops are dying out, shouldn't they be at bargain prices? I'm talking about less than $200 fully loaded.

In another couple of years I'm planning on buying one just to have. Right now I have 2 laptops and my phone, that's enough for me. I don't have the space for a desktop in my current bedroom but eventually I'll move around and get a lot more space.

Well considering they are not dying out no they shouldn't be lol. You cant get anything useful at that price point whether it's a desktop, laptop or even tablet.

I have a tower on my desk, I have a laptop to use when portability is needed and a tablet when it is about wasting time. It is all about having the right tool for the right job.

I have a desktop for general use, a 2 in 1 for travel or portable use and a phablet for working out.

I do not buy desktops; I custom build my own. Most of my friends do the same. Better value, better selection in parts- both functional and aesthetic, and better final result, in my opinion, and every cent is allocated as I deem best. Never any bloatware to remove, either! No software is installed that I do not select myself.

that's the big thing, for me. i don't need your 3rd-party crapware infecting my computer telling me to update/upgrade every 30 days.

Maybe we're mincing words here, but you still bought a desktop except you just built your own.

I had a laptop before my fully specced 2017 27" iMac, but it was used as a desktop computer 99% of the time.

Guy seems to have misunderstood the obvious intent with the original question.

What I bought were individually selected pieces of hardware and each ancillary item needed all the way down to the thermal compound used and the assembly screws themselves. I selected every single piece of software that was installed. All of which is an entirely different thought process and purchase decision than simply buying a ready made machine from a store. The end result was a custom designed desktop computer, but that is NOT what I bought; it is what I built.

Obviously, I would only spend the money, time, and effort to build something that I very much wanted. Building my own desktop computer clearly demonstrates that I value them. Desktop computers bought from a store do not meet my requirements by a wide margin. Only ones that I build myself satisfy me. Therefore, I am saying that a self built custom rig is what makes a desktop attractive to me; otherwise, no thank you. I am not interested in a pre-built bloatware infested computer comprised of lower quality components and assembled by a disinterested factory worker more concerned with meeting their quota than with quality workmanship.

The ability to design and build one's ideal computer increases the attraction of a desktop computer as there are so many hardware configurations possible and a vast array of aesthetic choices, far more than you could get with any laptop. The ability to expand and upgrade is also greater if for no other reason than my desktop has the room and expansion slots that make doing so possible. I have three hard drives installed now and I can still add three more if I choose. I can add two more video cards also. I find laptops to be very limited in terms of customization, upgrades, expansions, and they are prone to over heating. Their cramped internal confines make them more of a nuisance to work on as well.
