2.35:1 vs. 2.39:1 vs 2.40:1

Splitting hairs here, but I was wondering if any of you can tell the difference in theaters or on home flatscreens the difference between 2.35:1 vs. 2.39:1 vs 2.40:1?

Which one creates more of a widescreen and creates larger bars at the top and bottom of the screen?

I'm curious, because I recently saw Rambo 3 and I was impressed with the widescreen format, it looked "epic." Do any of you know the specifics in which camera was used and the lens setup for that film?

Here at blu-ray.com it says that Rambo 3 is...

Aspect ratio: 2.35:1
Original aspect ratio: 2.39:1

Little difference between 2.39 and 2.40. I use a 2.35 screen and front projector. Created the graphic below for proper framing of 2.35 and 2.40. You can save the graphic file and use for yourself.

2.39:1 to me.

Of course 2.55:1 was the super widescreen format.

Wider still: Ultra Panavision 70: 2.76. First used on Ben Hur. Was called MGM Camera 65.

I used to be a projectionist. Sometimes the aspect ratio of a film was determined by whether the curtains worked or not.

widest format was Napoléon 1927 it used "Triptych" for the ending of the film it used three cameras (1.33 standard back then) stitched together to make a 4.0 image

The widest of these 3 ratios is 2.40:1, but it's wider only by an inch or two.

When I bought my 2.40:1 screen I only chose that over 2.35:1 because the external scope lenses available for my projector are set for 2.40:1
