Wink Sold a Blu-ray player @ Circuit City (no, I don't work there)

So I dropped by CC today to sort through their $8.96 video games for deals (got Def Jam Icon... the last PS3 title they had left!).

Anyhow, as I headed to the register, I noticed a guy talking to a youthful sales rep in the Blu-ray/HD-DVD aisle. (For the record, my local CC's BD section is 2x larger than their HD-DVD section.) I overheard this guy telling the rep how he might buy a Blu-ray player, and I immediately dropped in with, "Do it. You won't regret it."

20 minutes later... he bought a Samsung 1400, and was considering also getting a PS3. Not bad for a dude in his 50's!

As a side note, the CC sales rep was very pro-Nintendo Wii. He also knew nothing of either hi-def DVD format because he was under the assumption that the Xbox 360 could play both Blu and DUD, so he got a little "education", too. I ended up being 10 minutes late meeting my wife for lunch, but it was well worth it!

Nice work, education is job #1 for us now.

I'm old also, not as old as you J/k, but I try to do the same everywhere I shop. Also, every time I see someone buying an HD-DVD movie I politely ask "what made you pick HD-DVD" and it always leads to a friendly conversation about both formats. It also usually ends up being a buyer that bought because a salesperson gave them guidance in that direction. I try to "school" people about Blu every chance I get, so good on ya!

Did my part today. Was wandering through my local Sam's Club (which I can now confirm is 100% Blu-ray - there's ZERO HD DVD players in sight, and several Blu-ray players available there, along with the snazzy Sony HDNA setup).

Saw a woman in her late 30s eyeing the Blu-rays and remarked casually how awesome it was to see so many Blu-ray titles on the shelves. She looked surprised, so I asked her if she had a Blu-ray player and she immediately responded with a "Yes, I bought my husband a PS3 for Christmas, but I haven't tried the Blu-ray thing yet."

I filled her in on the Warner news (go go consumer confidence!), explained how wonderful Blu-ray would look and pointed at the HDNA display - and then recommended some titles - she ended up picking up Ratatouille on my recommendation!

When I was at Best Buy last week I was picked up some movies and this man who was looking at TV shows asked me how much better Blu-Ray was. I told him to take a look at the display in the Home Theater section to see the clarity, but said it is amazing compared to SD DVD. He asked about the price of players and when I told him $400, he was kinda surprised. I told him to wait until spring and they probably will be sub $300. He said "I think I'll wait until then, but its on my list of things to get."

He never mentioned HD-DVD. This was BEFORE the Warner announcement.

Well Microsoft just repeated their old line item, that the 360 could potentially get a BD add-on...

Although given the quality of the HD-DVD add-on, I'd be scared to consider how it'd work, short of using a bus expansion [which wouldn't be a bad idea imo].

I work at Best Buy, so I actually sell a few Blu-Ray players a day.

It's great to educate the consumer on what the better choice would be.

Some blu players (Sony even) are already sub $300 and have been for over a month.

Maybe I should clarify... the customer was in his 50's. I'm only 27. He said he had sons my age.

Yes, the kids in the video game department couldn't tell me WHICH titles were on sale, and pointed me toward some big bins on the floor. PS3 titles are easy to spot cuz their boxes are smaller than PS2. Def Jam Icon was the last one in my local store, but I have heard one of the 2007 NBA games is on the list. Not bad for some cheap entertainment... it's less than a lot of PSN titles.

I was referring to the newest Profile ones. Or are those under $300 now too?
