Prometheus for me. Sure, a lot of good releases were out this year, but honestly, the first two minutes of Prometheus alone gives it the top spot in my book.

edit: this is, of course, in terms of 3D. Not movie quality. Not to say I didnt like Prometheus, i definitely did. Just when reading this thread title, I assumed we were voting on 3D quality.

BD: Hugo (Avatar too, but it was available as an exclusive for a while)

Theatrical: Life of Pi

Won't name Animated, since I didn't see any of the Dreamworks titles, or Wreck-It-Ralph.

Hugo is up there.

I thought Titanic and Ghosts of the Abyss had some of the most jaw-dropping 3D content because of the scale and subject matter.

MIB 3 is probably my favorite this year.

I also thought TinTin was absolutely fantastic!

I'd rather gouge out my eyes/ears than sit through Madagascar 3, so I can't comment on the 3D. My kids like it, though.

My most disappointed 3D release: Amazing Spider Man. Deserved to be better and it should have been,IMO.
For home Blu Ray 3D releases so far: I agree about your picks, but also for strong 3D:
Hugo, Resident Evil Retribution in 3D. And Titanic 3D being the best direct conversion (few or no CGI assets to re-render) I've seen.
Most disappointing was Underworld Awakening 3D, which looked better in the theater for some reason. It was mostly weak/average 3D.

Avengers 3D was great, along with Madagascar 3D on video and for the first time at home Avatar 3D (wow for the 3D).

Unreleased but in theaters would be: Silent Hill Revelation 3D with strong 3D. Rise of the Guardians 3D.

Nemo and Up have brilliant PQ, but the 3D is very average on both titles. Hopefully Monsters Inc will up the anti a little.
Agreed. Monsters Inc 3D was looking stronger for the 3D.
I Robot's technology of 3D converting needs more time in the cooker.

Yes. Same here, though there are some weaker shots here and there, most of the film having strong 3D. Great conversion.

I forgot to add John Carter 3D as another favorite of 2012 on blu ray 3D for the movie and 3D hybrid conversion, which was really good.

(I would probably add 2012's Silent Hill Revelation 3D right up there with Hugo's strong 3D, but it won't be on blu ray 3D till Early February 2013).

Titanic 3D, what didn't you like about the 3D conversion?
I agree about I Robot 3D, the others I didn't see, but Tin Tin 3D looked like below average 3D.

I just got a projector that does 3D and was watching some clips of these movies off youtube in anaglyph and the 3D is crazy good in a number of movies I thought were pretty average on my 3D TV and at the cinemas. I think I will be chaning my mind on a lot of 3D titles once I get fully set up.

Edit: it's so weird that I can't see the 3D very well in cinemas? Excluding 4k which I see very well.

3D really shines on a bigger screen! You get a much more immersive 3D experience.

I watch most 3D movies on a 109" projection screen, unless it relies on really deep black levels, in which case I like it better on my lowly 55" TV.

Actually I forgot The Lorax, that is also a great 3D experience and definitely in the top 10 of the year. Even though the film isn't perfect, I did actually enjoy it a LOT more than I thought I would and it was MUCH better than the critics led people to believe.

Default Best 3D this year...

I went to the theatre to watch/see Titanic on 3D. In fact I was little dissapointed of the 3D presentation. Recently, for Amazon's Lighting Deals they had Titanic on 3D for $14.99, so I bought it. So far, the bluray 3D was stunning! Amazing. Nothing compared to the presentation on that movie screen I went before.

Now, Prometheus on BD 3D (Bluray Disk) was ok. Little dark for my LED TV.

And looking forward to see Madagascar 3 & Nemo which I recently bought too.

My wife said that Nemo on 3D at that same theatre was very good, so she bought the BD 3D. Hope is not disappointing as you guys have typed on your reviews.

By the way, is it me or Harry Potter and the Deadly Hollows Part 1. on 3D suck BIG TIME!?

Thanks.

YES!! Harry Potter: TDH PI and PII both sucked in the 3D aspect. Easily the worst 3D blu movie released last year.

Yeah, Titanic's 3D preview in theaters looked good, but not really strong, probably because I saw it on the biggest screen in the theater, which tends to have weaker 3D than the smaller ones for some reason (washed out contrast possibly). At home, Titanic's 3D was outstanding and strong most of the way, agreed.

HP DH2 3D does have mostly weak 3D, but the dragon scene and one or two other scenes have really good 3D. Too bad they didn't apply that same quality to the entire movie. That has to do with the 3D budget and time though.

My list for 2012's 3D BLU-RAYS, strongest 3D to weakest 3D:
STRONG 3D:
(mostly strong 3D)
1 Avatar, Hugo, Madagascar 3, Imax Born to be Wild 3D
2 Titanic, Avengers (thanks to the final 40 minutes), Men In Black 3 3D

REALLY GOOD 3D:
(mix of strong and above average 3D)
1 Journey Two, John Carter, Piranha 3DD, Bait 3D, Resident Evil Retribution
2 Immortals, Prometheus
3 Wrath of the Titans (mostly after the brick maze scene it got good)

AVERAGE 3D: (good 3D, but could have been better)
Three Stooges in 3D and March of the Wooden Soldiers in 3D (Babes in Toyland) (Still nice conversions though for 3D and color)
Underworld Awakening (some very nice 3D scenes, but mostly a mix of weak or good 3D the rest of the way)
History of the World in Two Hours (mix of mostly weak, some good, strong 3D).
Abe Lincoln Vampire Hunter (could have been better for 3D)

WEAK 3D: (disappointingly weak 3D)
I Robot (I wasn't expecting much, but it does have some nice 3D once in awhile amid the weak 3D majority). They need a bigger budget and need to give this more time in the cooker.
Harry Potter Deathly Hallows 2 (was this released in 2012?) Some nice 3D amid weak 3D.

Honorable Mention:

Carnival of Souls 3D (for one guy (Gaetano), really good 3D) Not sure if it was first offered in 2012 though.
Blood of Ohma (mostly strong 3D, but some cases of extreme 3D that hurt the eyes, and some good 3D).

(Just waiting for some others to arrive in the mail that were also in 2012)...

In Theaters in 2012 but not on Blu Ray 3D till 2013:
STRONG 3D: Silent Hill Revelation, Rise of the Guardians, Hobbit 3D
Really Good 3D: Dredd 3D
Weak 3D:
Star Wars Phantom Menace (weak 3D with some good 3D) blu ray 3D pending.

Maybe my copy of Prometheus was faulty? It looked no better than Amazing Spider-Man to me apart from the CGI map sequences.
