I see this alone with everything else coming out in next 3 months and think to myself is physical media really dying? With everything that’s already got released this year and everything else coming out this year I think peoples wallets are going to run dry first.

Volver is the only one I want from this set. It’s an all-time fave so I’m willing to pay a premium price just to get the individual disc on the secondary market. No need to buy the whole thing.

I saw this with Four Rooms as a double feature in early ‘96.

Would be cool to get on 4k.

Flying Daggers > Crouching Tiger

Come on, Sony. Give it a decent home video release already. This was as good an opportunity as any.

I am definitely having a hard time with the titles. Are these really the best representation of Sony Pictures Classics?

I have seen a couple of them and many are not films I would watch a second time...
Synecdoche, New York for instance is for a very specific type of film enthusiast and I would imagine Call Me By Your Name also.

I was hoping for more highly rated foreign films instead of some of the narrower focused eclectic films. The Columbia Classics ranged from satire, epics and feel good comedies.

Would have loved to see different films in this pricey set.

I am surprised its not more of a Best Pictures winners or something.

Moonlight got one...as did Philadelphia. What's the criteria for a "gay film?"
When the gay character is actually played by a gay actor?

Um, it's called acting?
Was his performance insulting or condescending to the community?

I'm not buying Still Alice because Julianne Moore doesn't actually have Alzheimer's.

It’s not my opinion.

It was widely accepted because a straight male played the lead.

Personally, I could care less.

I nominate Daughters of Darkness to be added to the list of gay 4Ks.

It's really exciting but VERY expensive for us collectors. Time for player manufacturers to pump out some new players! UB820 is 4 years old now.

Time for some new blood.

Just a reminder for those interested in City of Lost Children, it’s also getting a UK individual release from Studio Canal later this year.

Wow, I want 7 of these:

Orlando
City of Lost Children
The Celluloid Closet
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Volver
Call Me By Your Name
Still Alice

But it will depend on price because CMBYN is the only essential.

The Celluloid Closet is a great documentary and incredibly foundational in terms of presenting a history on the portrayal of Queer characters in American media. A 4K release though? Baffling decision in my eyes. So many other films in the SPC line-up, I feel, would’ve benefitted from that upgrade more

It 100% IS your opinion.

I couldn't care less if the person playing the character identifies as straight.

It was also a thoroughly enjoyable movie.

And if you "could" care less...then you should. However, if you "COULDN'T" care less, then why did you bother posting about it twice?

Slc punk being in it is super cool. Still alice is the only thing I have zero interest in revisiting. Want to grab this but I could imagine it cratering in price pretty quickly but what if they only print 50 of them!! Gotta preorder

so why mention it?

It's funny how no one cares about gay actors playing straight men in rom coms or playing the guy who gets all the girls but a straight guy playing a gay character is wrong

Crouching Tiger is already on 4K, so it's actually the most pointless to include (although the listing says Dolby Vision, so is it finally getting a better encode here?). I guess it's the SPC release people would be most familiar with...but they are hardly doing a "best of" SPC here, so not exactly sure what the aim is in featuring that one.

Aside from Crouching Tiger I'm only familiar with a couple of these films, I'd probably grab Run Lola Run and Devil's Backbone as individual releases. I didn't much care for Volver or Still Alice. Not even familiar with the others. The Box Set is a hard sell for me even if it drops to $150. While it's nice that Sony is actively releasing films, including some truly obscure ones here. Not a fan of their propensity for bundling everything into boxed sets. That goes for the Columbia classics sets as well as this one.
