there's only one shot that in my opinion lacks the sharpness and clarity of all the other shots. it's the one with multiple na'vi in water, including a pregnant one, preparing for what looks like battle. it looks like it's only half resolution. if you look at the screenshot that TheSweetieMan provided, you'll see that everything is blurry in this shot. the water, the faces, etc. was it shot in 1080p and then used in the 4k version? honestly don't know if im exaggerating.

2020.
2020 was a dismal year for theaters, so I'll say 2018 would've been potentially a good year. Originally, it was planned for 2014, but now finally releasing 8 years later. 8 years is a long time in the realm of CGI technology.
Maybe they added in new techniques and advancements in the mean time.

Agreed, it seemed very odd to suggest that 2020 would have been a better year considering the pandemic.

2 and 3 were done back to back, 4 and 5 are waiting for the success of 2 to proceed fully but a load of prep has been done and they're all written.

The cynic in me says since the release of Avatar we've been awashed by CGI spectacle over the last decade that even Cameron's brilliance doesn't sway me like it did back in 09. If anything I appreciate Nolans 'commitment' to practical effects (where the budget can realistically support it). In terms of the 4k trailer it was soundtrack that moved me rather than the updated visuals TBH (to nit pick) that seem pro forma these days.

I hope it's like a Miller 'Fury Road' type comeback (although Cameron doesn't need it), but you know what I mean. I'm kinda skeptical. Although it's hard to bet against Jim.

The trailer actually really hyped me for this. I enjoyed the theatrical cut of the first one, but I much preferred the extended directors cut where we see Jake on Earth. I wonder if this one will also get an extended directors cut? Either way it looks astonishing the music is mesmerizing and it looks so unique as well. I can't wait, and we're already treated with the knowledge that Cameron has not wasted his time preparing a third movie as well as this one, and has the next two films on standby just itching to begin production! I'm ready to dive back into the world of Pandora (ironic since the movie is water themed).

Don't know if it was already pointed out but the 4K trailer seems to be opened up in terms of AR. Guess that means Cameron is doing what he did the first one in that regard.

Ok... um, seriously not trying to be some contrary mary or edge lord, but I was not at all impressed with that teaser. Visually it looks and feels like 13 years didn't pass on a technical level. The last Avatar was all hype and dazzling trail blazing fx and 3D, but as a story with compelling characters it was meh, a frankenstein cobbled together by other creative works.

If this is merely visually up to par with the first film, then I hope Cameron had a huge creative epiphany to bring on a stronger and original story. So far, this looks like more of the same, but with more water... gee whiz.

It's not about the man, the myth, the legend that is Cameron, I'm just calling it as I'm seeing it. It's so clean and antiseptic looking, everything so crisply delineated, I find that lack-of-style-as-style bad enough when applied to real hooman beans (Matrix 4) but with a completely CG world and characters my brain isn't registering that I'm looking at something realistic at all. Instead it thinks it's looking at a video game, that shot of all four of them staring at the distance with the sun in the centre of the screen literally feels like a demo level or something. Even the concentric rock circles makes me think I'm looking at a HUD. Stoopid brain.

But as Avadah 1 was shot on 1080p HD there's a certain noise floor to the live action footage and they carried over that texture into the CG, it helps to dither it and 'scatter' the light a little, that's what registers as realism to me. It's contradictory of coursh because real life doesn't have visual noise, but in terms of cinematic reality I'm a big fan of being reminded that there are people operating cameras and are capturing these images using light, glass and sensors/film. I'm so used to the cinematic vernacular of "reality" that when something looks like this I find it to be very unrealistic. Oh, sweet irony.

Not that I can't get on with hyper-real imagery, I love the look of Gemini Man in 4K60 HDR, but as that's mostly composed of tangible physical people and sets then the digitally de-aged Will has to blend with that particular reality, rather than having carte blanche with entirely digital everything in many, many shots.

I was waiting for someone else to say it first but I completely agree. What a waste of talent. Seriously as I said many times years ago the only shots that look real are the close ups. Wide shots all just look like cg fakery. It looks like it was shot alongside the first. OK its just a trailer but just as with the first the final product will not justify the time they take to make. The underwater shots so far do NOT look any better than any other cg fest.

It's too clean. A real world does not look like that. It's like there is no atmosphere.

Yep, you can have all the graphic detail in the world, but it's the little things like haze that often sell an SFX shot.

The effects should look a lot better after 13 years than what we see. That shot at 1.24 looks bad.

A lot of that comes down to design too. I just don’t find the Pandora world all that interesting looking compared to many other fantasy and sci-fi properties out there.

Right? It’s all very ‘idealised sci-fi landscape from a CES demo circa 2005’ kinda looking.
