This is the sequel to the biggest hit of all time directed by arguably the most financially successful director of the last three decades. West Side Story was a remake of a 60 year-old film dumped in theaters by Disney at the worst possible time. They're not comparable.

There's still a pandemic.
Steven Spielberg vs James Cameron.
A remake to a musical no one asked for vs a sequel to a film that most people don't care about anymore 12 years later.

Damn

Avatar 2 trailer: prepare to be swept away by boredom

Viewing the teaser for Avatar: The Way of Water on my laptop felt like being forced to look at someone’s holiday photos. Let’s hope James Cameron’s 3D sequel has more depth to it than just nice scenery

Avatar 3 is gonna happen no matter what, Cameron shot it back-to-back with the second one (which is part of the reason it took so long). Whether we get 4 and 5 is up to how well the next couple do at the box office, and I don't think anyone can say for sure what will happen. I doubt it'll reach anything like the first film's box office, but I can see it reaching a billion once the marketing machine really kicks in.

Disney is going to put a lot of money into the marketing. Tie ins with the park, a video game, Mcfarlane and Lego have the toy license. I am sure there will POPS.

Avatar 3 could wind up going straight to Disney+ if Avatar 2 turned out to be a disaster

In Avatar 5, I imagine that Jake Sully will be an old man, and his kids will have taken over his role as the rebel fighter.

These nine paragraphs of zero-effort snark written by some pasty nobody whose name I read at the top of the article but have already forgotten were without question the most boring thing I have watched/read/listened to in at least the last month.

Avatar 2 3D will make 1 billion +.

Avatar 3 3D will make .9 billion.

Avatar 4 3D will make 1 billion.

Avatar 5 3D will make .7 billion.

Avatar 6 3D will make .5 billion.

Avatar 7, TBD.

All speculation of course.

Sorting them in order, will take some knowledge of the release dates, since "The Way of Water" is a sign of what the future subtitles will be. "The Way of Fire", "Way of Air", "Way of Earth", etc.

This is what internet journalism is. Could be worse could be a youtube video with a goofy thumb nail.

Avatar 1: - "The Way of the Forests". Focused on the health of forests.
Avatar 2: "The Way of the Water" Focused on the health of the oceans.
Avatar 3: "The Way of the Wind" This will be the movie with more flying creatures and air pollution killing them.
Avatar 4: "The Way of Fire" Nuclear powered weapons.
Avatar 5: "The Way of the Earth", because in the end, everything returns to the earth when it dies.

They already did that in the first one. Cameron will need something new. I think the theme will be about Over Population.

So many people online blowing their load over the visuals and im just here trying my hardest to see what they are seeing. I loathe /Film but caught an article in which the writer verbally Jerks off to a screencap from the trailer as if it is mindblowing visually. Broken record i know but closeups look great, you can see the tech at work. Everything else looks like a PS5 trailer.

I know I'm thinking like a crazy person, but I'm not going to judge a movie on the basis of a 99-second trailer.

It looks like it'll probably be visually stunning like the first one, & all the bells & whistles of 3D, HFR, IMAX & whatever else they're planning for theatrical exhibition will no doubt add to that, but the main thing I'm excited for is the action scenes.

Nobody shoots, edits & presents action like James Cameron. It's his greatest skill IMHO & he hasn't let me down on that front so far in his career.

Anyone know if Cameron took the Variable Frame Rate approach that he alluded to some time back? Using 24fps for the most part but using 48fps for select scenes that are either problematic or particularly well suited to it..

For playback, I assumed it was probably gonna be a 48fps container with the 24fps sections having duplicated frames. That way no novel technologies would be required.

I was glad to hear Cameron talking about this as I hated HFR for most of The Hobbit (despite really wanting to like it), but at the same time felt that very select scenes worked quite well with it. Large, distant sweeping shots, slow mo sections, 'dreamy' sequences etc.
