Yes, Avatar did well. Was it because it was REALLY a great film? Or was it because the special effects and 3D was top notch and everyone wanted to see the new visuals? Hard to tell.
I suspect the second one will draw lots of attention and curious crowds and it will do well. But I think they were overly ambitious to green light 4 sequels at one time. I feel like the fad will begin to fade after the second one and by the 4th one, we will be weary and tired of it. |

They next Avatar will be a huge event just like the first one, and everyone will go see it to find out what all the hype is about so it will do very well in the box office, but the first one kinda faded quickly and people don't seem to still talk about it much anymore. Unless he has something special in the story department, I think it will be the same with this next one.

![]() On a 4K disc, it will look fantastic. The sequels will probably look stunning. |

It's hard to take anything Cameron says as the truth anymore. He tends to speak out of both sides of his mouth. I love his movies but do not trust much of what he claims. Though he's still one of my favorite directors! As for Brolin turning down Avatar sequels, I'm not surprised with his Marvel schedule and Deadpool 2. Four Avatar movies is alot to sign up for. Many actors have also turned down roles in Cameron's films just because of not wanting to deal w/ Cameron. Last edited by mjvmovieman; 08-31-2017 at 03:49 PM. |

Yep, they will at least be eye searing movies on 4k, that's for sure. The main worry is the story. Where does Cameron plan on taking this series? We are already regurgitating the main characters. At my last count three dead characters were returning for the second film.

The man said hes waiting for glass-free 3d. So that could be a game changer.

I'm not talking about the box office. After it finished its run and the blu ray was released, talk about Avatar kinda subsided. It don't see it in many lists of people's favorite movies. Some movies stay fresh for decades. People seemed to move on relatively quickly. I am sure once the sequels get closer talk will pick up again, but it just seemed like a short phenomenon to me.

The marketing for Terminator 2 also spoiled the twist of Arnold being the hero cyborg. The hallway scene at the arcade was supposed to be a big surprise for audiences.

The premise and world that was created along with the story that was presented did not captivate me. If I'm not connecting with the story on a fundamental level, there is really nothing that could be done to make the sequel something of legend beyond technical merit. Terminator 2 is similar in the sense that it set new standards for both budget and effects, but I was also engaged with the story and characters. What does Jake Sully mean to me? Nothing. For context I'm neither an Avatar basher or lover. It's marvelous to look at but utterly predictable. And I think being predictable is one of the worst things a movie can be. Especially if we're talking about James Cameron. With both T2 and Aliens JC suberted expectations. Aliens crossed genres and T2 turned the first movie's villain into the hero. |

I recently re-watched Avatar and man is it just kind of okay. I don't hate it but I don't love it either. The villain is the best damn thing in it, so I'm not surprised they're forcing his return despite it making no real sense.
