Default HBOs The Wire

This has been my favorite show ever since I streamed the first two seasons from some god awful website in the mid-aughts. Finally watching the Blu-ray set and am realizing there is a LOT of room for improvement. Looks better than ever but theres significant compression issues. Would be great to see this get a UHD release some day.

Significant compression issues? I don't remember noticing any.

Anyway we're lucky to get TV like this on BD, I doubt we ever see a significant number of TV releases on UHD.

I watched it all the way through recently and had zero compression issues.

Hmm, I’m noticing quite a bit of funny stuff going on with the grain. It’s not constant but I notice it quite a bit in darker scenes and some shots where it seems like they zoomed in a bit.

I will say that I thought the series finale had some weird issues with grain. I thought I remembered it looking like that when the remasters aired on HBO a few years ago, though. I thought the BDs looked fantastic as a whole.

The BD definitely slays any prior versions I've seen and the show is as profound as ever. So many amazing characters and scenes. But it could definitely benefit from a higher bitrate at times.

Sounds like the problem is your setup, because there aren't "significant" compression issues in this set at all. It's a shame it's not OAR, but that's another actual issue altogether.

Maybe. Never seen anything quite like it on my setup so maybe a bad set of discs? It often looks more like streaming quality, for whatever reason.

Doubtful there's a bad set of discs. Maybe they sent you DVDs by mistake :P

Yeah, Id say maybe you got some bad discs? I was blown away by the quality especially in the early seasons.

The reason it took as long as it did to get this on BD was because David Simon was not a fan of releasing it on that format. He claimed that it went against the artistic intent of the show, and that it was meant to be seen in a 4:3 aspect ratio with low resolution to give it that gritty look. So I'd bet that we won't be seeing The Wire on UHD any time soon, if ever.

However, I'd love to have both The Wire and The Sopranos - the two co-best shows of all time - on UHD.

Could be. I've definitely had bad luck with my physical purchases of this series. The DVD collection was awful because the individual discs were wrapped in these thin plastic sheaths and they stuck to the discs when I removed them. I could never get those discs to play right. Honestly not sure what's up with the BD set. Maybe I'm just seeing things. 90% of it looks great but the grain in some shots just looks really blocky to me.
