Sony Pictures The Wife (Writer Drama starring Glenn Close)

Quote:
After nearly forty years of marriage, JOAN and JOE CASTLEMAN (Glenn Close and Jonathan Pryce) are complements. Where Joe is casual, Joan is elegant. Where Joe is vain, Joan is self-effacing. And where Joe enjoys his very public role as Great American Novelist, Joan pours her considerable intellect, grace, charm, and diplomacy into the private role of Great Man's Wife. Joe is about to be awarded the Nobel Prize for his acclaimed and prolific body of work. Joe's literary star has blazed since he and Joan first met in the late 1950. THE WIFE interweaves the story of the couple's youthful passion and ambition with a portrait of a marriage, thirty-plus years later - a lifetime's shared compromises, secrets, betrayals, and mutual love.
Going wider this weekend in over 800+ theatres. Be sure to check it out to see Glenn Close give a performance unlike anything she's done in her career.

Hopefully

I was able to see it at an advanced screening about a month ago and her performance is a tour de force. I've wanted to see the film again so badly and I am glad it's expanding much wider this weekend, so I can see it again.

The film itself was OK. Glenn Close, as usual, was amazing. I'd see it again just for her.

Bumping because now that Glenn’s won, maybe some more people will take an interest in this wonderful film and her brilliance in this role.

A shoddy recording of her wonderful acceptance speech:
Glenn Close Wins Best Actress, Drama - 2019 Golden Globes (Highlight) - YouTube
I wish I can join you in your enthusiasm for the film but some dramatic films about prolonged unhappy, miserable, infidelity filled marriages doesn't exactly float my boat.

Not only is Glenn Close great in this, but the film as a whole is excellent. A terrific drama and tightly edited into 1 hour, 34 minutes.

It's on Blu-ray next week. I highly encourage those who like dramas to check it out. One of my favorite films of last year.

I also love Meg Wolitzer, whose novel the film comes from. Oddly, I hadn't read this particular work of hers.

Just finished it, found it quite underwhelming, sure Close's performance is superb, but when you can read the entire story from her face alone in the opening phone call, I think that's more to do with thin material than a powerhouse performance.

Saw it this evening just to check out Glenn Closeís Oscar nominated performance. She certainly elevates what is otherwise a good, but not great drama.

Wow, the powers that be really have it in for Close. Sorry to hear that she was snubbed again.

I'm used to expecting good work from Close, which maybe is why I wasn't knocked out by her performance here (I'm not saying she wasn't damn good, mind you). That probably explains why Jonathan Pryce stole the show for me. He should've ridden Close's coattails this awards season, and been a strong Best Supporting Actor contender. Gosh, I need to watch Carrington sooner rather than later. The film itself is a decent, low-key slow-burner. 3 stars.

I agree, Pryce held his own very well in the film, and is just as solid as Glenn yet got no recognition this awards season.

As it is, in my personal opinion, Close was maybe the 4th best nominee in that category anyway (yes, even McCarthy). With all the awards she racked up until the Oscars, Iím sure thereís nothing to hang her head over. She was a huge winner all season.

Dunno why you needed to say it like that... McCarthy was pretty much undeniably great in Can You Ever Forgive Me?

Pretty stacked lead actress lineup... Aparicio was the only meh performance of the bunch.

I say it like that because the general consensus is her roles and films prior to this latest one were considered garbage and forgettable. She regained that respect from her Bridesmaids/St. Vincent days with Can You Ever Forgive Me?, and she (and the film) deserves all the praise they can get.

If she continues to challenge herself and gets cast for roles like this, then there will come a day when McCarthy won’t be looked at as the underdog or a 5th slot choice.
