It doesn't matter; 480p, 1080p, 2160p, ... Japan will see it in 4320p (8K).
...People with a "Monolith" 8K TV.

Just a different aspect ratio.

Wait for HDMI 2.1

Industry watchers attribute the slow start to the lack of content and that consumers are “waiting for more improved 8K TVs”.

That is a polite way of saying that Samsung and Sharp have jumped the shark. Their current 8K TVs lack HDMI 2.1, which is required to input 8K video at decent frame rates. YouTube is one of the only providers to offer 8K video content but the current TVs are not capable of decoding it. Companies are trying to sell the story of the wonders of upscaling but consumers are evidently not buying it.

More TV manufacturers are expected to launch 8K TVs in the coming year as HDMI 2.1 chipsets emerge. Some of these TVs may be showcased at CES 2019 in Las Vegas next month.

"NHK’s 8K (well it’s actually 7680 x 4320) broadcasts are now available on a daily basis on a special channel between the hours of 10 am and 10 pm. The picture quality of the broadcasts will be 16 x greater than that of HD, and audio will be delivered in 22.2 multi-channel. NHK will be broadcasting in frame rates of 59.94, 60 and 120P."

So 120fps HFR seems to be part of the 8K 'Super High Vision' package...

Even if the first generation 8K TVs don't support a 120Hz refresh rate, it is clear they are going to need to by Gen 2 or Gen 3.

That means backplane speeds are going to need to increase dramatically and a 120Hz 8K panel refreshing in '4K mode' will be able to deliver a 240Hz effective refresh rate and 50% BFI @ 120Hz.

LCD 8K panels have the second blanking control for the backlight and so will be able to support a 240Hz effective refresh rate even at 8K (meaning they can suport BFI @ 120Hz even at full 8K resolution).

Hopefully LGD is understanding this disadvantage they have versis 8K LED/LCD and will turn that minus into a pkus by adding a seperate blanking co trol to their WOLED backplanes. OLED is far faster than LCD, so with a seperate blanking control, WOLED will be able to do everything LED/LCD can do as far as HFR and motion performance, just better (no smearing).

It's goid news that NHK is putting a focus on HFR 120Hz 8K broadcast. They understand the advantage that HFR and improved motion performance has to deliver to sports broadcasts: https://www.nhk.or.jp/strl/publica/b...ture0074-1.pdf

And in light of that and their position that OLED is superior to LCD for HFR and improved motion performance, the recently-announced partnership between NHK and LGD for 8K Briadcast of the 2020 Olympics is especially intriguing : http://www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20181207000442

It appears as though the odds of LG delivering 120fps 8K WOLEDs no later than Spring 2020 just went up significantly!

(Oh, and just noticed this from the KoreaHerald article: 'LG Display’s adviser Yeo Sang-deok said in his keynote speech at the forum, “Self-emissive OLED panels with a wide viewing angle and infinite contrast ratio feature quick responses that are ideal for watching sports games.” ' - LG is only going to be able to show-off the quick response tmrs of their WOLED panels if they speed up their backplane and also hopefully add a blanking control ).
