I have a friend who has the job of proofing DVDs and BDs for a living here in the UK, and the other day, after ranting about how rubbish Mirrors was, and how the longer cut is a total swiz since it's only 10 seconds longer, he calmed down enough to say that he's seen the upcoming Uk release of The Good, The Bad and the Ugly. He says it is a thing of beauty, stunning, and in the extras it includes the formerly MIA commentary from Leone expert Sir Christopher Frayling. FINALLY!

(side note to OP's discussion) Talk about a dream job! I'm sure it would suck to sit thru all the crap - but getting paid to watch movies?! Niiiiice...

You'd think - but he has to follow a MASSIVE checklist and make sure that a finished product ticks all the boxes. The label I used to work for had a 48-point checklist for DVDs - for BD his is well over a hundred, and he has to do it through for each language version on the BD as well.

If ever there was a worse way to take the fun out of watching movies other than having to be a critic and watch most things, or a censor and watch EVERYTHING, I can't think of it.

Has the UK release on BD actually been announced? I haven't seen anything about it coming out. Do you know when we should expect it?

Hi Bruce,

I'm afraid I can't find a trace of a formal announcement anywhere. Unfortunately, my friend works to the timetable set for him to deliver proofs by, which isn't always a good indicator of actual in-stores release date. I know at ADV UK we used to work six months and over in advance, where we could - we aimed to have product finished and ready 2-3 months before street date. I'd like to think the majors are similar, but I've seen all sorts of timeframes in this business, and they don't always make sense.
