And yeah, the BD cover art kinda sucks but the lenti slip makes it better.
I guess I don't really follow why it's not supposed to look great. It's not the colorful, 70mm-shot Lawrence of Arabia or some detailed CG-filled blockbuster from this decade, but it's not shot on video like The Blair Witch Project or 28 Days Later either. I suppose it's subjective, though. Not picking on you, I just take issue when others say a movie was never meant to look good, particularly anything low budget or prior to like 1990.

While it makes an ok stab at the original bleach look, the film didn't look like this.

Totally agree. We just watched it again last night, and my word, when this does get released in UHD, it will have some face-melting HDR

It looks like a 4K version might be available on Google Play?

I'm going to go ahead and buy the Blu-ray. I'll expect a thank you when they release this on 4K shortly.

As I understand it, the DVD was based on a film print, so it had the bleach bypass process used for the theatrical prints that was always intended to be part of the film.

The Blu-Ray was scanned from the original negative, but they forgot or chose not to add a filter that would approximate the bleach bypass, thus the BD doesn't look nearly as dark or monochromatic as the theatrical version or the DVD.

There are comparison caps here:

https://forum.fanres.com/thread-1359.html

This is one. The top is the BD, the bottom is the filter applied to it to match the theatrical look/DVD:
