The ultimate hobbyist, Gary Tooze, gives it a nice enough review.

Of course, he's never seen the movie theatrically. He rarely does.

As this has been a favorite of mine for a while, it sounds like a must-buy.

This movie is nothing like Hostel. I can see enjoying both but I wouldn't assume to classify one with the other. My friends that enjoy Hostel for the gore are were bored with Old Boy but then those friends just watch gore films.

I loved Old Boy, I liked Hostel but not enough that I ever watched it a second time and haven't seen the part II yet

for my thoughts...
maybe I anticipated this movie too much but PQ was not good as I hoped...
don t mean it is bad but... maybe could have been better. SQ is awesome!!
it's tarantan asia 1st try, movie choice was excellent! hope we'll get more movies now
think i remember reading somewhere Tartan saying all their releases will be region free. it might've been Starz tho, i can't remember.

the 1 is most likely for the DVD that is also included in the package.

i wasnt sure if i want to buy this yet, but after hearing it will be used to gauge releasing other movies, i went ahead and ordered.

You should grab Sympathy for Lady Vengence and Sympathy for Mr Vengeance.
It is considered the Vengence Trilogy by Park Chan Wook

It had some really nice camera work in it.
I am interested in seeing the other 2 movies Park Chan-wook's vengeance trilogy" Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance. Though they say Old boy is the better of the 3.

I've seen all 3 of them. Lady was not as gruesome as the other two though. Still kinda messed up. Sympathy for Mr. Vengance starts off a little slow but gets pretty interesting and gruesome in the later half of the movie. One word on Mr. Vengance is achillas heel.

All three are pretty twisted if you ask me.. very well done but just plain twisted.

Be advised this movie is not for everyone.

I thought Lady Vengeance and Oldboy were tied for first and Sympathy for Mr Vengeance is in third.

I loved the use of colors in Lady vengeance... how it goes from colorful at the start to very drab in everything from set design to clothing. I'd love to have Lady vengeance on BR with both versions... the Fade to Black/white version and the normal cut.

Cool

Can anyone tell me if Oldboy is available in Canada? Went to BB, Future Shop, HMV, Blockbuster, and some smaller centers I knew had bluray, but couldn't find it anywhere. I'd like to get my hands on one. I have an order from Amazon already on the way and don't want to place another order because I'll be away on holidays soon over Christmas, and thought about taking along my player.

Any help?

I thought the PQ of Oldboy was just so-so, even though some of the cinematography was exceptional. I enjoyed the movie a lot, but I can definitely see that it might not be everyone's cup of tea.

I went to see most of the movies in HorrorFest 2007 the week after buying Oldboy. And my mind kept returning to Oldboy. I'll definitely be giving Oldboy another spin once I get my loaned-out copy back.
