From what this article says the first season was done on HDCAM-SR tape

http://www.studiodaily.com/2012/03/g...-for-season-2/

Quote:
The Alexa was also used for the show’s first season, but the camera’s 4:4:4 output was captured to HDCAM-SR tape and followed a conventional tape-based workflow through editorial, visual effects, color-correction and final assembly.
So I take it that means at least that season is locked at 1080p?

I would think so. However, they might be able to get 10 bit pixel depth, better color, and an HDR grade out of it. It just depends on whether they used limited broadcast specs when they created the workflow.

I know the reason the Dolby Atmos remixes on the first two seasons were lackluster was because of the less than ideal sound elements the team had to work with.

Things got better for the show during Season 3.

It's the same as 4K = 2160... Difference is negligible and marketing-wise is interchangeable.

As far as I know only two episodes exist in 4k. Before the start of season 5 HBO took there time to go back and re composite the fx and master the last two episodes of season 4 in 4k. They released those episodes in I-max for a limited time.

Just because Blu-ray is 1080p doesn't mean you're seeing all the available 2k detail from the master.
I totally agree. Here is for example Titanic 2K master vs 1080p blu-ray (compressed in 256 color gif).

They mastered the last two episodes of season 4 of Game of Thrones for the IMAX and it looked really good as far as I can remember, although it was a faux IMAX. They could remaster it for 4K UHD Blu-ray mind you that would be around 82 episode once everything is all said and done. But if HBO and WB thought that it would sell enough 4K UHD Blu-rays why wouldn't they.

Tons of VFX for movies in fact most are only done in 2K, in fact a lot of movies are done using a 2K digital intermediate (di).

When HBO releases the seasons on Blu-ray they should add the comic-con panels.

Default HBO Westworld is out in 4K 2017-11-07

I assume with this release will we indeed see many of HBO's offerings in this format.

Probably not until the entire series has been released on HBO. They have a lot of things to do to get GOT ready for a 4k release with HDR.

Yes, it will be an upscale as the master files were comported to 2k.

Season 1 is stuck in 1080p, and may be difficult to get an HDR grade out of it because of the cameras they used.

Everything after was finished at 2K and HDR grades would be comparatively simpler.

Much depends on whether HBO/WB is willing to go back to the source files and create a better master for season 1. Normally, you can eek out a bit more data than the first time around when only thinking about it showing up via broadcast rather than a wider media landscape that will need higher quality.

I think GoT on uhd + hdr is a given, but like others have said, surely it will happen around the time the show finishes airing next year. Seems like the ideal moment.
