Criterion Sex, Lies, and Videotape (1989)

Quote:
With his provocative feature debut, twenty-six-year-old Steven Soderbergh trained his focus on the complexities of human intimacy and deception in the modern age. Housewife Ann (Andie MacDowell) feels distant from her lawyer husband, John (Peter Gallagher), who is sleeping with her sister (Laura San Giacomo). When John’s old friend Graham (a magnetic, Cannes-award-winning James Spader) comes to town, Ann is drawn to the soft-spoken outsider, eventually uncovering his startling private obsession: videotaping women as they confess their deepest desires. A piercingly intelligent and flawlessly performed chamber piece, in which the video camera becomes a charged metaphor for the characters’ isolation, the Palme d’Or–winning sex, lies, and videotape changed the landscape of American film, helping pave the way for the thriving independent scene of the 1990s.
Quote:

I hope this includes the Soderbergh short "Winston", I don't think that has been released anywhere since the Criterion laserdisc.

I remembering seeing this when I was well...about 15 years old and not sure what to make of it (and with my parents to boot). However, my movie tastes have changed a lot in the last 25+ years, so maybe I'll be more interested now.

Dammit, I recently bought the Sony disc they put out in the UK and I bet you anything they'll port this to the UK as well (since it's Sony). So looks like I'm double-dipping. One of my favourite Soderbergh films, and I'm a big fan in general.

I have no problems with the current disc, but it's one of my favorite movies so of course I'll double dip.

^This. The Sony release is exceptional though so i'll be very interested to see what more they can squeeze out of it in terms of AV quality.

Like Midnight Cowboy, it's great to see a title that hasn't been seen in The Collection since ye olde Laserdisc days...now let's see Cronenberg's Crash rise from the dead!

Also Polyester! And the Godzilla flicks, which were announced for LD yet never released.

They’ve been digging back into the Laserdisc well a lot as of late, and that is a very good thing.

Also "Princess Bride", and there was talk about "She's Gotta Have It".
I've been saying for a while now, I think "Lolita" will join that list soon too, though that isn't based on any specific rumblings.

I agree too. My current version is pretty great looking. It will be interesting to see what the C transfer will be like. I assume lot's of special features too.

I hope more Soderbergh come to follow! Specifically Kafka and that new cut of it he keeps talking about, and The Limey!

What I want is an upgrade on "Schizopolis", and to finally see "Kafka" (if he ever finishes the re-cut). But I think I read a year or two back that the rights to "Full Frontal" and "Bubble" were reverting to Soderbergh and he was looking to get a Criterion release for them. ("Full Frontal" might be a casualty of the Weinstein stuff.)

I can't imagine Full Frontal getting a standalone release from Criterion. I'd imagine it'd get dumped as a supplement a la The Underneath.

Or if they want to release a 5 films-esque set of Soderbergh films, that'd be cool too.

I'm kinda amazed how many big American titles Criterion has been releasing of late (and with future rumors). They've gotten quite a few big names recently.

I was thinking it would wind up as some kind of box set of "the Soderbergh completist" or somesuch, but "Full Frontal" actually would make sense as a bonus feature on "sex lies".

I could see it, Bubble, Girlfriend Experience getting a bundle together as his experiment collection.
