Below is a list of features for the Special Edition and it appears there are no new extras compared to the original 2-disc (BD/DVD) release. Looks like the extras will simply be on the Blu-ray whereas the original release had the extras on the DVD.

Quote:
  • High Definition Blu-ray (1080p, 2.40:1) presentation of the main feature
  • Audio: English 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio, Spanish Dolby Surround, French Dolby Surround
  • Subtitles: English SDH, Spanish, Korean, Cantonese Subtitles
  • Audio Commentary by Director Carl Franklin
  • Character Profiles Featurette
  • Outtakes
  • Screen Tests: Sanaa Lathan, Dean Cain
  • Photo Gallery
  • Original Theatrical Trailer

The MVD Marquee collection is a low priced line.

Either they are:

Reprints of previously out of print releases

or

Blu-rays that include the previous archival special features missing on the original release.

The existing video and audio masters will also be reused for these releases.

At this point are they just throwing darts at a wall & whichever movie it lands on, you get a special edition. This is more of a WTF than Get Shorty.

Well. MGM needs money so I presume having a ton of licensing deals and offering companies the opportunity to redo a release helps.

This is also is just the special features finally on the BD disc so not a special edition more like a BD 1.5 release.

Almost thought this said Nick of Time for a moment, the mid 90s Johnny Depp thriller.

According to DVD Beaver, this is a "significant upgrade over the MGM" release:

Never heard of this label.

That is some seriously fugly cover art, but at least they got the encode right.

Yeah, the moniker "special edition" really means nothing. They can slap that label on basically anything.

I actually remember liking this movie, so at least now there is a viable edition to get. Although I would never pay the current asking price of this "viable edition". While this label deserves credit for doing their release right, the only reason to care is that MGM screwed up it's initial effort.

We watched this tonight. Edge enhancement was very obvious throughout - about in line with Sony's 4K remastered BD of The Fifth Element, maybe a little less than that, I can't remember it that vividly at the moment. So, I'm thinking they just pulled a Shout Factory and pumped the levels and boosted edge contrast. When it was over I popped in the original Fox release and was a little surprised how much softer it actually looked. I didn't spend enough time with it to really get a clear gist of it, whether it might be remastered, or from a whole new scan, or just tweaked - though there was a splice line in one scene that should offer a good point of comparison. But if they did simply tweak it, it's the best tweaking I've ever seen. Definitely happy to have upgraded this one during MVD's recent sale.

They actually used the original poster artwork, which is usually a safe bet. But yeah, this time... not so much.

Just grabbed the german edition and despite what some sites list, it has all the same special features as this release including the feature length commentary. It also has a reversible sleeve

Going by the DVD Beaver review, the MVD BD looks like a completely different master compared to the MGM BD in terms of color and framing. The MVD disc appears to be a newer master that had more fine detail (though the EE could be baked into the film element like with Fifth Element) and exhibits film specks and such in different spots compared to the MGM BD, in addition to a slight magenta push with framing shifted to the right. The MGM release with it's MPEG-2 encode looks softer with EE and seems to be a a poorly deinterlaced 1080i master (going by some scanline/combing artifacts in caps 1 and 3), no doubt the same element used for the initial DVD release. It has as more of an orange tinge in addition to framing towards the left.
