Yea I'm still in shock over this. Watching that all unfold was legendary. An early own-goal, dreadful first half, and the eventual comebacks by Panama and Honduras. And now I see that Panama's first goal didn't actually cross the goal line haha. Talk about a perfect storm, holy crap.

4 years ago the US eliminated Panama by scoring 2 late goals in the last match against Panama. This time, were the tables turned or what. We were just not as good this time, and the writings were on the wall from the get go. Other teams in our confederation have simply overtaken us.

i posed in the wrong thread... but here it goes...

just coming in to express my extreme embarrassment in team USA not being able to beat a team with a population of basically the state i live in, CT. 1 million people lol.. no world cup for USA next year

WHAT A F'ING JOKE

fire Bruce, he never should have been brought back on after his previous pathetic attempt at coaching... bye bye Bradley, youre awful... gut the whole team...Dempsey, would have loved to see you in one more tournament but sadly we are too pathetic to even qualify....USA soccer set back another 10 years...unbelievable

Some pundits have made a good point that qualifying in CONCACAF is too comfortable, too easy, where 3 (possibly 4) out of 6 teams get to advance in a relatively easy field. A lack of challenge leads to less of a motivation to improve. Compare this to the European WC qualifiers, where in each hex only ONE TEAM, the winner of the group gets automatic advancement, while the runner-up of each group has to go through a high-pressure 2-game playoff. In other words, for teams to improve, they need to be in an environment where they get to play other teams in many high-pressure situations and they get to beat each other up regularly to ensure zero complacency and zero taking things for granted. But then again, Europe has a robust soccer industry which the US doesn't yet have. We need an industry bigger than the one we have now in order to have more meaningful matchups among teams, raise competition level, and thus raise each other's levels. And that of course means the fans and the viewers need to be more involved than they are.

2018 is going to be a weird World Cup. No USA, no Netherlands, no Chile, no Italy. Italy falling short for the first time in over a half century is a huge shock.

Football without an Italian national team is not so good. Brazil and Italy should always be in the championships!
