I don’t think you want to find out how LDs look on a 4K projector. Let those happy memories stay as memories It’s amazing how a format that looked clearly better than VHS in the 1990s now doesn’t look so different from it, in some respects. The streaks of chroma noise alone are something else.

I'm sure you're right.lol...

Everytime I see someone trash a Bluray or UHD release for some relatively minor flaw on these forums , I chuckle to myself. I remember a day, pre-internet when all we had were magazine reviews of the latest LDs, I couldn't wait to get my hands on the next release described as "film like" by the reviewer..

I decided to display some of my Star Wars "faces" in my bookcase. They are visible in my gallery. It was pretty cool showing my kids these "huge" cds..lol..

I had my Pioneer CLD-99 hooked up to my ISF calibrated 77C8 and the discs just didn't hold up being upscaled. But hooked it up to a 50” Insignia plasma in my “other” HT and they look very nice, especially the Criterions. Sacrificed the audio but really enjoy watching the discs again.

I kinda wish I had a player with optical out so I could get an LD+G decoder, or even a player with one built-in, they did make a few of those.
Totally agree as I only recently picked up TPM on LD w/OBI. It doesn't affect me too much as I pretty much already know the dialogue already as I've seen the film so many times.

Edit: A shame the 4k looks so horrendous.

Since I ended up taking pics for the "Yes I'm a Sick Puppy and buy too much Star Wars Stuff" thread I started taking pics of the 4k and BD, the moved to DVD and figured why not go all the way

In my defense most of these items I bought in the mid 2000's when people were getting rid of LDs cheap. No way I would have bought them at LD prices new

Top Left --
Pan/Scan Aspect Ratio
1982 20th Century Fox 1st release of Star Wars
2nd Vertical row -- 1983 CSB/Fox re-release of Star Wars, 1984 release ESB, 1986 Return of the Jedi in CLV Format
3rd Vertical Row -- 1985 Star Wars and ESB CAV format. As far as I'm aware RotJ never had a full CAV/P-S US release to match
4th Vertical Row -- 1992 release SW/ESB/RotJ CLV Format

[Show spoiler]IMG_1511.jpg

Top Row -- 1st US release in Letterbox Format
1992 (Fox Video) Star Wars (there is a 1989 CBS/FOX release that I no longer have for some reason).
1989 (CBS/FOX) Empire Strikes Back,
1990 (CBS/FOX) Return of the Jedi

Second Row -- 1st Japanese Releases of the original in Letterbox format
1986 (Christmas Day) Star Wars,
1987 Empire Strikes Back,
1987 Return of the Jedi

[Show spoiler]IMG_1512.jpg

1st Row 1995 Letterbox, Remastered Editions. SW, ESB, and RotJ
2nd Row 2000 Japanese release The Phantom Menace, 1990 US release The Ewok Adventure

[Show spoiler]IMG_1513.jpg

1st Row -
1993 US Definitive Edition,
1995 Japanese Definitive Edition Re-release that replaced the George Lucas Book with the 2 disc The Making of Trilogy

2nd Row -
1997 US Special Edition Trilogy,
2000 Japanese Special Edition Trilogy,
1997 Singapore release of Empire Strikes Back: Special Edition. I'm not entirely sure how I ended up with this one, either it was part of a package deal or I just thought the cover was interesting and it was cheap

I would love to own a Mcintosh MLD-7020, just never have stumbled on one locally to purchase. I have some LD's around I would love to give a spin again but no LD player sadly to play them, I sold my old LD player for parts because it malfunctioned (it wasn't a Mcintosh one). I would buy a Mcintosh LD player both used or for parts (I can fix some things on these but I am no expert). I usually look for one of these online a few times a week but I can never score one. If I start spinning LD's again it has to be on this machine, just my preference.

I've found that you have to be aggressive in your search but do not hesitate. You chose a great player and you'll get one eventually...

I lost three 7020s over the last year or so by not jumping on them sooner but you would be surprised how often they pop up. I've had better luck on Craigslist vs eBay.

Where are you located? Def opt for a local sale as I would not have the unit shipped unless it comes in the original double box (which is massive) or else you risk damaging the glass which I've seen happen many times. Last I heard...it was $800 to get new glass from McIntosh.

I do check craigslist but no luck. This may be a rebranded Pioneer but for me it's the LD player I want. I'll keep searching for one.

It turns out I long forgot about a Pioneer CLD-79 I had sitting around in a closet for years. Dusted it off and it works flawlessly except I don't have the remote. Got it off craigslist for $50 in 2014, I forgot about it. It has some issues to start the tray wouldn't eject, etc but it's working good now. I got it as a backup to a DVL-90 that bit the dust and sold it for parts. Still want the Mcintosh player though but I have to admit this is a pretty great LD player so much that getting the Mcintosh player seems more for looks and style now. Spinning LD's again now, feels good.

Oh man! That's a sweet score, dude...especially at $50! You probably already know the McIntosh is just a re-badged CLD-97 so you're not missing much as the internals are the same except the later 7020 models have the AC3 board.

I'm glad the 97 is running smoothly for you. I believe the remote you need is the CU-CLD121 but most Pioneer remotes work with other Pioneer players. Even my McIntosh can be controlled by the Pioneer remote.

I did actually forget I got that player, had it in a closet for years. The price can't be beat on it. I had a DVL-90 from the late 90's that just went bad. Sold it for $100 for parts on craigslist. I got the CLD-79 though while I was still using the DVL-90 but the DVL-90 went bad in late 2019. Got the CLD-79 as a backup player in 2014.

I do appreciate the model number for the remote, I'll have to try and get it at some point. I know the Mcintosh is a re-badged Pioneer but it such eye candy I have to get one for the right price even if the CLD-79 is probably good enough. It should hold me for awhile why I seek a Mcintosh LD player.

LOL my bad on getting the 79 & 97 mixed up. The light shouldve went off that you got it for $50... I had a super long day and I had just taken out my contacts. It is still part of the Elite series though...but yeah you don't need to go after that specific remote. Any Pioneer will do. Good luck in your quest to find a McIntosh.

Thanks, I still have the DVL-90 remote I found it yesterday had a battery explode in it though I hope the contacts are still good. I didn't sell it with the parts player because at the time I lost it. Would it work with the CLD-79 if I give it a good cleaning?

I'd post pictures of my two X9's together, but I can't have both running at the same time as I only have one voltage adapter.

Try here. I've used them several times and never been disappointed.
