USA Wings of Disaster: The Birdemic Trilogy

Severin Films will be releasing, quite possibly, the most essential film set of our generation: The Birdemic trilogy. Birdemic is the best film not directed by Tommy Wiseau, and to my shock and terror, James Nguyen apparently made two more. This box set featues over 13 hours of bonus features that wll explore everything you ever wanted to know about Birdemic. And if you weren't sold yet, the front of this limited edition features a lenticular cover! The wide release date is set for April 4th.

Quote:
In 2010, writer/producer/director/software salesman James Nguyen harnessed the powers of action, adventure and environmental awareness to ask, "Why did the eagles and vultures attacked?" Nguyen's groundbreaking BIRDEMIC: SHOCK AND TERROR soon became a global phenomenon and launched his career as The Master of the Romantic Thriller™. In 2013 Nguyen returned with his biggest budget to date for BIRDEMIC 2: THE RESURRECTION, never-before available on Blu-ray and exclusive to this collection. Nearly a decade after his original classic took flight, the auteur The New York Times hails as "a latter-day anti-genius" brought his extraordinary saga full circle with BIRDEMIC 3 - SEA EAGLE. For the first time ever, WINGS OF DISASTER: THE BIRDEMIC TRILOGY gathers Nguyen's complete avian epic on 3 discs with 13+ hours of Special Features for a cinematic vision that remains unlike any you've ever seen.

Would definitely be down for a copy with the Rifftrax commentary on-disc, like the Aussie Blu of Miami Connection last year.

Unlike Miami Connection though, I can't really see myself ever rewatching Birdemic sans-Rifftrax... unless I had a bunch of buddies over, perhaps.

I actually bought the Suburban Sasquatch Blu-ray last year because it had on disc Rifftrax track on it! I'd love if more releases embraced this! Give money to RT and more exposure too!

Jesus Christ there’s sequels? Pass. First one was enough for me. Intentionally bad or not, it didn’t work either way. It was just dumb. And this is coming from someone who lists Samurai Cop amongst his favorite films.

As someone who's a bit fussy about what bad movies I like (I hate just about anything intentionally bad like SyFy originals, I'm kind of bored by The Room, etc), I think Birdemic 1 is hilarious. But everything I've heard about 2 is similar to the arc of Tommy Wiseau - he realized that everyone loved it for its terribleness and the totally inexplicable plot structure, but he's an idiot, so he made a sequel that tried to be funny and "intentionally bad" which makes it far, far less funny than if he'd tried to make another earnest movie in the same vein. I have no interest in the sequels. I have the standalone release of Birdemic and that's good enough!

First one is an important film in how NOT to make a film. It gets literally everything wrong.

Then James realized this and tried to make bad movies with the first sequel. It's just a lame movie that doesn't have the bad charm.

Tommy Wiseau didn't make a sequel to The Room, what are you talking about? If you mean The Neighbors, I am certain that was also made just as earnestly, for better or worse.

I'm glad this is coming out but I'm honestly pretty disappointed that James Nguyen's first two films aren't included.

I'm talking about how after a bunch of initial anger at the reception of The Room, he tried to be "in on the joke" and now does paid public appearances at screenings of The Room all trying to cash in on how it was bad. He's just done it via different means than making a sequel or something. He's retroactively ruining his movie by awkwardly attempting to pretend he also thinks it was funny, while the Birdemic guy is just ruining the sequels by attempting to pretend he also thinks the original is funny.

You nailed it. The first was just beautifully incompetent on every level and came across as hilarious. When the director realized this, he tried to make a funny sequel but failed as it lost any charm the first had. Unintentional humor is often far funnier than anything written.

Sadly I found it out the hard way when I found a dvd of part 2 at Family Video. Good news, it was only a buck; bad news, it's horrible and not funny. I didn't know it existed at the time, and now I'm just finding out about 3, which I have to guess will be closer to the second than first film.

But it does have a lenticular cover! Must resist lenticular Satan...

The thing is with the second film is thateveryone involved was trying to make an intentionally bad movie except for James Nguyen. In the documentary about him done by Vice he says he didn't have any control over the picture.

I don't think James is delusional that his film is garbage, but I do think he's delusion in that he thinks Birdemic will somehow be a jumping off point into becoming a serious Hollywood filmmaker. He thinks that Birdemic as a concept can make a good film even though the good version was made 60 years ago.

I don't know why... but I pre-ordered this a few weeks ago and it just arrived this morning here on the US West Coast.

I haven't gotten a chance to dive in quite yet, but the first disc appears to be exactly the same as the standalone (no surprise) and even had the "seal" sticker on the top of the case, but was not sealed in its own shrink wrap. I just swapped the first movie out with my opened copy and set it aside on the movie shelf.

Have the DVD of 2 and I'm mostly interested for the commentaries on that... but the back doesn't list deleted scenes or outtakes like the DVD does, so I'll update on whether or not they're actually gone. EDIT: I forgot, the back of the DVD lied and doesn't actually have deleted scenes or outtakes. Nothing is actually missing from the DVD release and I'm hoping the new commentary is as amusing as the first few seconds lead me to believe it will be!

As for 3... I've watched the first few minutes and I've heard from reliable sources that it's... definitely a Birdemic movie. Hopefully I find it at least passingly amusing.

If anyone has any questions before buying, I'll try my best to answer!
