Default "They/Them"

They Slash Them 2.jpg

"They/Them" (pronounced 'They Slash Them') has the bones of a solid concept that ultimately never allows itself to embrace what it could've (and should've) been. Unfortunately the film caters more towards the cis het horror community rather than being authentic in its execution of "queer horror" and doesn't follow through on what it sets out to do. The ending of this film is
[Show spoiler]absolutely infuriating in that it presents us with a character face-to-face with their abuser. An abuser of hundreds of other LGBTQ+ kids and teens. A destroyer of lives. Yet in that final moment we "the abused" are still supposed to resist our killer instincts and not put an end to the person(s) responsible for causing such immeasurable harm.
As a result I present the question, "If in a horror film you're not going to kill the one abusing you, then why are we here and why bother at all?"

All of that said, watch "They/Them" because the existence of this film is important. A film consisting of mostly LGBTQIA+ talent (both in front of and behind the camera) doesn't happen often. Support it. Then let's discuss the many missteps of "They/Them" so next time we execute a better queer horror movie.

The UK has some solid extras with interviews with Ducastel, Martineau and Couët and 56 Dean Street Special. It’s also a BD-50.

Jusn Barquin wrote a really good review about the film’s issues.

Not really gay cinema, but does anybody know if the HBO Max Show "Genera+ion" is avaiable anywhere outside of HBO Max? Considering that there removing it from the plattform it would suck if it would be "lost" permanently.

Yesterday a Blu release of this was listed on Amazon as Currently Unavailable, but today you can pre-order it. Granted, it doesn't have a release date yet, but it does seem to at least be expected to be released on Blu.

Saw The Inspection yesterday, about a young gay man's experience in Marine training. Not a high recommendation, but at least a strong one. The film is set in 2005, as "Don't Ask Don't Tell" was still being observed, which creates tension for our protagonist in this environment in both subtle and overt ways. The two scenes that bookend the film with the protagonist's mother was as tense as any of the obstacles he faces in training.

It's an A24 distributed film, but unless it finds an audience, I fear it won't see a physical media release. Unless they at least give it a BD-r option (like Under The Silver Lake).

I haven't seen a few from your list, but far and away the best LGBT+ film I saw this year was the Polish festival entry Elephant. Gorgeous cinematography, better-than-solid performances, a strong (if slightly tropey) plot... I highly recommend tracking it down.

I'm posting because I have a thought/question, but also because I am hoping this thread gets lots of posts in the new year. The last post was in 2022.

I'll use the spoiler feature here, as I guess my comment could include somewhat of a spoiler for those who haven't seen Hidden Away.
[Show spoiler]So I recently found this little gem. I watched it recently and loved it. It was well-acted and it felt realistic - right down to the fact that we never really see much "action" between the protagonists. It's a lot of build-up, and that's actually part of what made it seem so believable a story. Anyway, my question is in regard to the front of the blu-ray. It has this statement at the bottom: WARNING: CONTAINS STRONG SEX. I didn't really see any sex in this movie, not even straight sex. So why the disclaimer? I'm genuinely curious, as I wonder if it's just a "two guys being together" thing. The wording is not shown on the listing here, but it is shown over at Movies Unlimited, where I purchased it.

Thanks for any info! Looking forward to discussing some awesome films in 2023!

In From the Side from the UK. It is out on Blu Ray in the UK but is region locked. Well worth a look if you are region free.

In From the Side was released theatrically in the U.S. this past Friday. If you have any nearby arthouse theaters, check their listings. Although I have the UK Blu-ray, I am still going to see it on the big screen today.
It's being released by Strand Releasing in the U.S., so a future DVD is almost certain. Strand has not, however, released many of their films on Blu-ray. Maybe this one will prove to be one of the exceptions.

Joyland, Blue Jean, All the Beauty and the Bloodshed, Grosse Freiheit, Fire Island, Wildhood have amazing reviews. Otherwise there’s Benedetta, Ailey, Swan Song, Benediction, Parallel Mothers, The Novice (Fuhrman plays a character twice the age than in Orphan: First Kill the same year!) I suppose you could also count EEAO and Moonage Daydream, the leads of Something in the Dirt are asexual and gay, some have read trans subtext into Crimes of the Future (it’s about bodily autonomy and growing organs), a trans woman appears in Gangubai Kathiawadi (though played by a cis woman), Jackass Forever has a lot of male nudity, queer icon Janelle Monae appears in Glass Onion, there’s some bisexual characters in Babylon, a gay character in Licorice Pizza and trans masc characters in Small Body and A Man Called Otto. I thought the drag documentary Maisie was okay but could have been better. In terms of short films: Misnomer, Too Rough, Silver and Gold, A Different Place, Mars, Candy

Much appreciated! Much more out there than I had seen for myself.

Just a reminder: "Spoiler Alert" based on Michael Ausiello’s book "Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies: A Memoir of Love, Loss, and Other Four-Letter Words", starring Jim Parsons and Ben Aldridge is coming out on Blu-Ray on Tuesday (February 7th). The movie is also streaming right now on Peacock in 4K Dolby Vision.
