If they had been smart, they would have never allowed Netflix to stream any of their titles at all and done everything to try to protect the physical media and rental store model.

Now they are in a bad place, streaming world has horribly hurt their net profits, but it is now so ingrained among so many, and with the new Gen Z all into mini youtube vidoes and TikToks and instant click gratification (even if it all the same seems to leave them less happy and satisfied) they are maybe afraid if they try to go back to the old model that Gen Z will just say forget movies (but I'm not really so sure that would happen and you could say well someone like Netflix might stick to streaming and then they would only watch Netflix movies, but Netflix, now that they produce a lot of stuff, that takes so much money, even they appear to be into negative net profits and if they had the entire last bits of Hollywood catalog they can still show removed, not sure they would be producing anything, so I think Hollywood could actually force the old model back, but it would be lots of rants and troubles and take a number of years of drama and mess at this point, might still yet be well worth it in the long run though.... and probably would be better for people in the end)

When I saw Living in theaters a few days ago, during an ad for that Jason Segel/Harrison Ford Apple thing, an old man behind me groused, "They shouldn't advertise streaming things, they should be trying to get people back into the theater."

I’m can’t go down this rabbit hole again regarding physical versus streaming but would like to add this is the worst use of parenthesis I’ve ever seen. Also, if you’re gonna write entire essays, please try to break them up into more “digestible” paragraphs.

You know it's funny you say that. I find it funny during the pre-show they are always advertising all the streaming services like Apple+, Hulu, Amazon Prime and any other streaming service.

I get that theaters need revenue, and will accept TV ads from anyone to make money, but it seems counterintuitive to advertise for the other team.

I laugh at the amazon prime silence your phone bit they play before the trailers start. Especially the one that says I know it's been a while. But you're in a theater and says all the things you shouldn't do in theaters. Like talking or text on your phone or keeping your clothes on.

I can see if they are advertising network TV. Stuff for ABC, CBS or NBC. How I knew a lot of shows were coming out. They have promos for the shows and interviews with the cast. How I first heard of the Jason Lee show My Name Is Earl or the shorted lived show Surface I think it was called. That starred Lake Bell about a creature i think it was.

Now it's just look at this crap that's coming to streaming and will be canceled soon after

That's one of the few good pre-movie rolls. I think I've seen the M&M's trying to disarm the bomb for the better part of 2 decades.

The worst is Maria Menounos laugh after admonishing us to not eat all of our candy before the movie starts.

It was supposed to be a convenient method of customers accessing content in an ideal all-in-one service, but what has it turned into? Everyone has their own streaming service now!

It was never going to be a one stop shop. That's a myth. But some companies - like Verizon are grouping the streaming services under their umbrella. You only pay Verizon for all the streamers you want. They pay the individual streaming companies and take a small management fee.

I suspect sadly though the end result will probably be we stick with the streaming model but prices increase a lot with much longer contracts and probably less spending on content.

Equally my guess would be that physical media will be killed off(or at least diminished a lot from were it is even now) not by a lack of interest but rather by streaming exclusivity. We've seen this already with some new properties but I suspect it will start to filter into catalog titles as well so they can be worth more streaming.

In the past I think part of what worked against that was that you had such a big backlog of physical media along with most people still having at least a DVD player knocking about. Now though I feel like were moving away from that, fewer players and more of those masses of DVD's have probably ended up in landfills rather than on the shelves of used stores for £1.

Pretty sure the plans were being made pre-pandemic. Or rather pressure was on already to follow Netflix/Amazon/Apple.

But did anyone stop to ask why or how? Nope.

Physical media is never getting back to its heyday. Already people are pirating because they can't see everything on one service, you think making them go to a store will solve it?

It won't go away, but it'll grow more and more niche and cater to the crowd that actually buys them - which it's already been doing for years now - cult classics, premium packaging, genre movies.

Streaming subscriptions were an overreaction to piracy. The studios thought they could persuade some of the pirates to pay a low monthly fee instead. Though they were mildly successful in that regard they also persuaded lots of people that were previously spending considerably more on theaters, physical media, and cable subscriptions to switch over to streaming as well.

Now the studios have devalued all of their movies and TV shows and are unlikely to ever convince people to pay high prices again.

This. Proprietary content and dozens of "services"(and counting) is already annoying and becoming NOT cost effective. Its only going to get worse. I aint playing this game of multiple subscriptions to watch a show or two. No way.

Maybe it works for those that do nothing but stream all day but for the rest of that have a life, we can find other things to do and "somehow" will press onward without access to a specific show or movie. .

What's ironic is that streaming and VOD actually makes piracy much, much easier, as it's a ready source for high quality 4K & HD versions to be ripped and put online.

There was no way to watch or download a decent quality version of Top Gun: Maverick until many months after its theatrical release (which probably helped repeat viewings and the overall box office, as anyone curious only had one way to watch this movie properly).

I swear, studios have been so ****ing dumb these past couple of years. Further down that rabbit hole, and the movie industry will soon be as ruined as the music industry is.

Yep. Throwing movies online after 2 weeks and they'r still making a lot of money in theaters. All to please people who don't give a good GD about theaters. They will go bankrupt trying to please those people.

Again really I think the issue is that we've switched from a model based on profit to a model based on speculative investment.

and from one based on quality and experience (and ownership for the home part of it) to one based on not giving or knowing or caring about such things but (instant grab on future promise, long term hyper speculative) MONEY, MONEY, MONEYYYY which has turned into money? .
