How are things going for you, 88 Films Official? The constant sale has me a little bit worried. Before I was kind of pissed off when the prices were raised to 15 pounds for new releases but now I'm getting the vibe of a clearance sale.

I hope you're doing well and that there are many more years of films to come out on physical discs from you. And will the Vault series be an ongoing thing?

Has anybody gotten replacement slips or been able to exchange copies with damaged slips from 88? I had two slips arrive in pretty bad condition in my latest order (one has a spine slash that actually cut through the card) and I'd like to get replacements if possible. I know the slips are more like special bonuses but still. I also had something arrive without a slip even though it was still available when I ordered it.

Yes. I sent pictures of a damaged slip via email and they sent me a replacement slip which arrived the next day. Couldn't have been more helpful.

Received ALICE SWEET ALICE today, I've got bad news if what's true of my disk is true of others.

Right out of the gate, about at the 2 1/2 minute point while Alice is looking at a portrait of The Virgin Mary in the hall to when floor-scrubbing Mrs. Tredoni scolds her, there are some pretty big audio anomalies. I sounds like a microphone in the wind.

Please check your disks and see if it's on yours too.

Yup, it's pretty piercing. Thankfully the distortion is brief but I'll probably mark the spot and cover my ears next time. I only got to about half the movie before I turned in for the night so I don't know if the anomaly reappears elsewhere.

Sounds like there is some more stuff when the funeral director opens the doors to the family seated in front of the fireplace just after Karen's death.

I wrote 88 Films, this seems like problem.

I wonder if they're going address this in any way. I've seen ALICE look far worse, they seem to have done what they could, but this audio thing seems like something that slipped through quality control. I don't recall it on their DVD.

I invite people to go to the 88 Films site, and drop them a respectful mention of this.

If it's not on the DVD, and is on the BD, then something got messed up, and they clearly have a source with which to correct it.

88 films response to the sound issue.

Quote:
Timothy,

Yes that is some some damage to the optical soundtrack that has been improved as far as we could but is still noticeable sadly.

It doesn’t happen again though.

Best,

I don't mean to press on this, but you released a DVD of the film where the soundtrack has no issues in that moment. Wouln't it have been possible to use it to patch that area of the film?

Thank you for responding,
Tim

The quality of the audio on our dvd is very different so it would have been a very obvious patch. We tried it but decided against it. Sorry if you’re not happy but we really tried our best with this release and spent a lot of money.

I’ve seen people asking about Alice and hounding Warner for years for a blu. I’m more than happy to accept a single audio fault inherent in the current state of the original elements if it means we get the film restored and on Blu Ray. Yes it’s annoying, but that’s what happens to film stock and it’s better to preserve it now in its current state than wait until it’s too late

Yeah I agree - at the end of the day, lots of these films are getting older and their sources are going to get worse rather than better over time.

Though I 100% get why its slightly annoying, my opinion is that it is a very minor thing on an otherwise fantastic release of a film that many people have been waiting for on blu-ray.

Just watched The Dragon Missile and can thoroughly recommend it!
The fairly short 85min runtime allows it to be mostly killer and not much filler (unlike something like Brave Archer, which was just too long).
The Dragon Missile weapons were cool (and lethal, leading to plenty of lost limbs/heads), plenty of great fight scenes with lots of acrobatics, trampettes and that footage played in reverse technique to achieve impossible looking jumps, and, as Black Dynamite would say, it had lots of Kung fu treachery!

There was also one of the most abrupt endings I’ve seen in a Shaw film!

PQ was pretty nice, though the black levels often seemed a bit weak.

May be late news by now, but my copy came from HMV and had a slip under the cellophane.

Any word on when the Spiritual Boxer, Black Magic 2, and Amazonia is going to be available to pre-order? I'm anxious to place an order but I'm hoping to kill all 3 of these birds with one stone (or at least two of them anyways, lol).

I'm wondering the same thing.

I'm also wondering if/when any hints might be given as to the next wave of Shaws they're releasing...

If it's another Mutant (apparently worse!) I may just put my sealed copy up on Amazon. Assumedly the transfer is the same for both the US and the UK discs?
Isn't 88's a 2K scan while Code Red offers a 4K scan? Anyone know yet about the differences between the two releases? Which one should I go for?
