just awful for such a classy label.
I completely agree.

Normally, I can't be bothered with complaints about packaging because it's usually something about a slipcover or art work. But these ECO cases threaten the disc itself.

I had my eye on a title at a local store but they only had one copy. On the back I could see a small tear in the art insert and pressure mark on the clear plastic wrap. I knew it was an ECO case. So I had to ask..."if something causes a mark on the plastic and a tear on the art insert did it also hit the data surface of the disc?" An ECO case provides no real protection against impact or abrasion. It's basically a dust cover.

That's not acceptable.

BTW, I have THIEF OF BAGDAD being delivered by UPS.

Now, here's the annoying part. In a dozen years, I never had a UPS shipment delayed...until my last three amazon orders. I've now had three consecutive amazon orders "delayed by adverse weather". That includes THIEF OF BAGDAD which should have been here today. And there is no bad weather between here and the amazon.ca warehouse. Three shipments in a row?

Watched a bit of Thief of Bagdad last night. Saving the whole movie for the weekend with friends. The image quality is fantastic. A wonderful print and great transfer. The tints are perfect too, not as neon as some other silent titles.

The only problem I had was with the supplement with production photos. They did a good job of editing together wonderful stills and a fun music score, but each still is preceded by a title card describing it, and the title card stays on the screen three or four times longer than the still itself! Some of the stills were held on the screen for just a couple of seconds. Totally backwards.

Maybe it was designed to facilitate fast-forwarding through the stills while being able to read most of the descriptions, then freeze-framing on the still itself. If they're 1080p HD, a freeze-frame on a still should look identical to when it's playing.

Then the music starts and stops all the time... I think it's just un-designed.

Yeah, the Kino transfer of that one is terrible and the source (film) is cobbled together from various sources. It's an interesting story, and Joan Crawford and Jack Palance did outstanding jobs. But the Elmer Bernstein score is the most memorable part for me; it was effective, especially at the end.

I watched THE THIEF OF BAGDAD last night and the transfer was terrific. I've been watching a lot of silents recently. In fact, I watched THE THIEF OF BAGDAD in the middle of DIE NIBELUNGEN (watched SIEGRIED but haven't watched KRIEMHILD'S REVENGE yet). I'm extremely encouraged by this effort from The Cohen Group.

I must say that my fear about the ECO case was largely unfounded.

While a bit flimsy, this case did NOT have the open cut-outs that I generally associate with ECO cases. You could see where the the cut-out lines were molded...but the cut-outs were not removed. The case is solid plastic (although soft) and does protect the disc.

I also just watched "Thief". All I can say is WOW! Starting with the quality of the transfer and ending with the wonderful score. Cohen has hit this one out of the park! I hope everyone took advantage of this on Import CDs when it was still $10.79. Hell...it's still a bargain at $13.19

It's worth it, just for the Jeffrey Vance commentary, which I'm saving for next weekend.

Pro-B...any way of making this thread a sticky? It gets lost in the sauce.

Thanks if you can!

The 2012 edition of "The Last Bought/Watched Blu-ray", which was locked, was unstuck, since there is a 2013 edition now. Going forward, however, this is probably the maximum number of threads we could have here. It is already too crowded in the sticky area.

finally got a chance to watch Thief.
looks very good, and what a cool silent film.
btw: I acquired 10 clear non eco elite type bd cases through ebay to use for these bds.
(they are rare for sure)
only difference is much squarish top corners vs. more rounded on the cheap eco versions on the Cohen releases.
very happy to be able to change out these eco crap cases.

As much as I'm interested in their releases, I'm not sure their output is enough to warrant a stickied thread. I think if anything, we should have it as a test run to see how much traction this thread gets over the course of a month or so, but as Pro-B says, this sub-forum is too crowded with sticky's, and if this one isn't truly necessary then it should be un-stickied.

Thank you so much for the heads up! I greatly regretted not ordering this before. In the past two days I've ordered "The Thief of Bagdad" and "Tristana". I haven't seen either of these films but after the glowing reviews on both I had to snatch it up. With the library they've obtained and the care they've given so far, Cohen Media Film is the one to watch!!

Thanks for the thread sticky.

I still have to watch my copy of Delicacy. I'd like to pick up Farewell, My Queen and Tristana in the future, as well.

I'd like to see them design their covers with a less obtrusive Cohen logo.
