It looks like the pilot is on this Tuesday.

As far as Joss Whedons opinion goes, he stands by Alien Resurrection as an awesome script. Enough said.

In the UK we got it in widescreen from series 4 onward (TV transmission & DVD), so I'd think Fox would have a hard time trying to sell an HD version in 4x3. So I'd hope for the same with Blu-ray, sorry Joss.

Yes, but as I've posted above, in Europe 16:9 was the original aspect ratio (series 4 onwards).

...but Fox are going to do what they're going to do, they won't take any notice of anything posted here.

Of course it'll happen, it's just a matter of when. I reckon the broadcasters want their opportunity to run the shows (which amount to several hundred episodes, don't forget) without the distraction of a Blu-ray release and Fox are obliging them.

Once the novelty has worn off on the TV broadcasts, then we'll see the Blu-rays. Although the rumours about an X-Files reboot and/or new movie might put paid to the Blu-ray anyway, i.e. Fox will want to time the release of the Blu-rays to promote any new content.

Wasn't Twin Peaks remastered about 5 years ago? Only just got a BD release....

OTOH, The West Wing has been done for a while as well, but no sign of a BD release.

Yeah, but how many people are desperate for West Wing on Blu-ray, and (more to the point) are desperate enough to pay the hundreds of dollars/pounds that such a set would cost? I'd wager that there's a lot more demand for Buffy, X-Files etc. And Twin Peaks is a catalogue title that's never been at the forefront of new video formats, so I'm not surprised it took several more years after the remastering to get a Blu-ray release. (But it was bloody well worth the wait!)

With all that in mind, I'm 100% convinced that a Blu-ray release of Buffy and X-Files will happen. It won't be tomorrow, no sir, it may even be in a few years' time, but they will get done at some point because it'd be too big an opportunity to miss, both for the fans and the studio.

It was not sure if it was for the original DVD releases or the Gold Box set, apart from a few things been tidied up it was the same master as far as I know. Seinfeld is the same, it was mastered in HD for the DVD format.

Unfortunately with the demand for streaming and broadcast HD content, Blu-ray releases are third on the list of studio priorities when it comes to catalogue television. But I'm sure they'll get round to us one day like Geoff D said.

Yeah, I got properly confused too. Ok, right, so Tuesday we get to see how they've dealt with what will definitely be the most problematic season as far as HD goes. Can't wait.

It's a shame about TWW, the remasters are far superior to the DVDs that are already out there, particularly the first few seasons.

I'm confident that both BtVS and The X Files will both see a BD release at some point. Probably as Geoff says, it won't be soon, but it'll come I'm sure. Let's just hope that they don't wait for a landmark anniversary - another 4 years to wait for The X-Files' 25th. 3 years until BtVS's 20th.

Really excited about some of the more visually exciting episodes being screened in HD like Hush, Restless, Premeval, No Place Like Home, The Gift.

Don't forget Once More with Feeling, that one should look gorgeous in HD, with the colors and everything. And that's the one episode meant to be seen in widescreen.

Sort this forum by number of posts, and you can see a pretty good indication of what people want most! XFiles is in a zip code of its own...

By the way, if you want a peak at Angel S1 in widescreen, I made a video with all the "previouslys" that were cut on the dvds

You also get a few shots of Buffy S3 in widescreen.

That's what angered me the most (along with many, many fans I'm sure) about the US DVD sets for both shows. ANGEL fared worse than Buffy simply because in at least two cases, cutting off the recaps meant they cut into the episode, making it incomplete:

Season 2 episode 20, "Over The Rainbow" (as quoted from wikipedia, but I've added some details here):

Quote:
The opening scene for this episode is missing on the Region 1 DVD release: The "Previously On Angel" segment led directly into the teaser for this episode, and featured Angel, Wesley and The Host surprised to find Cordelia has vanished into the portal with Landok. They immediately begin searching for her.

Wesley:
'She's gone....Cordy's been sucked into the portal she's in The Host's dimension now'

Angel (faces The Host):
'Where's Cordelia?'

The scene flash-cuts to Cordelia's current location on Pylea, as shown on the Region 1 DVD. This scene is missing because the Region 1 DVD release of season 2 does not feature any of the "Previously On Angel" segments, but the scene and segments are intact on the Region 2 and Region 4 DVD releases.
Season 3, episode 3, "That Old Gang Of Mine"

The entire closing scene to this episode's "Previously On Angel" was a set-up for a joke, a joke that any viewer introduced to the show on Region 1 DVD or other ways to see the show (Netflix, etc) would never have known about:

Here is a transcript of the ending to the recap, and the opening scene of the episode:

Quote:

(Scene from season 2 episode 16, "Epiphany")

Shot of Angel tossing Darla through the glass doors of his suite.

Shot of Angel and Darla kissing in their fit of passion.

Angel, holding Darla's arm as she's holding a shard of wood as a stake: "Get dressed and get out, because the next time I see you, I will have to kill you."

CUT TO BLACK

Angel in voiceover: "That night still haunts me..."

FADE IN, Close on Angel's face, he continues speaking:

"I'm ashamed of how I treated you. (Looks down) The way I used you. (Looks back up) I took - what I needed, (looks back down) then I cast you aside and that - that was wrong of me. Was very wrong."

Then it cuts to who Angel is speaking to...obviously it's Darla, right?

Right?

Nope...Merl, sitting on a chair in Caritas.

Merl: "He's reading!"

We see that the bar is empty except for Merl and Angel sitting facing each other, Wes standing behind Angel and Gunn, Lorne and Cordy leaning against the bar behind Merl.

Angel: "I made some notes."
An entire gag, and a funny one, ruined by cutting the recap.

Of course there are other examples where like the Buffy season 5 finale "The Gift" missing the recap meant ruining the opening to the episode and like many episodes of ANGEL also meant a sudden hard cut right into the episode's action. Happened a lot in seasons 3 and 4.

EDIT:

Found this brief mention of Buffy's OAR by Joss Whedon himself, interviewed last year (July 24, 2013)

http://www.nerdist.com/2013/07/joss-...nd-avengers-2/

Quote:

Nerdist: Speaking of DVDs, will we ever see Buffy on Blu-ray? I know it’s probably not your decision, but I know there is a demand for it.

Joss Whedon: People have been asking me that a lot, I have no idea if we’re ever gonna see Buffy on Blu-ray, I don’t have like a guy I can call and be like, “Hey, let’s get that Buffy out on Blu-ray.” I mean, I’m for it, I wish they would un-letterbox it. That offends me deeply, because I shot it for 4×3 frame. I’m not the boss of that. But I think it’s a good idea.

Yeah cutting the "previouslys" was a very poor decision from Fox. With some shows it doesn't really matter if you remove them on dvd, but they are part of the episodes of Buffy and Angel, and were in many cases important for the opening scene.

That's one thing I was happy about with my region 2 dvds, all those segments are intact, except for Buffy S2 and Angel S1. Only the dvds from South America have those segments (to my knowledge).

Itunes has them for Angel S1 but they're cut in the other seasons. They seem to be intact for every Buffy seasons.

They absolutely need to have them back on the blu-ray. But I'm pretty sure Fox stopped cutting them, they were back on the dvds for Angel S5.
