He said he liked Twilight Time's approach, so I will keep my fingers crossed that this does not involve high prices with limited ditribution.

I'm so happy they are doing Day of the Animals as one of their first BluRay releases!!! I actually prefer this film over Grizzly (although I love that one, too). I really hope they improve upon the Media Blasters DVD version. It featured 2 different "versions" of the film. The theatrical print, also titled "Something Is Out There", which was full of scratches and had audio drop out and even some brief moments sliced out it seemed, and then the TV version which was a CROPPED pan and scan image and incredibly fuzzy to me. Because of the aspect ratio change, I have always watched the "Something Is Out There" version, despite the title change and scratches (which honestly make it feel even more like a grindhouse film).

So, I am really wondering, have they found a brand new print of the theatrical version of Day of the Animals, with the correct aspect ration (2.35.1)? That is my biggest concern for this BluRay release. I also wonder if it will carry over any of the extras from the Media Blasters DVD. But that's the least of my concerns compared to the aspect ratio issue.

EDIT: I guess I should have read that interview all the way through.

"DAY OF THE ANIMALS, which will be presented for the first time anywhere in its original OAR uncut, from an IP, and not some beat up print or a misframed pan and scan TV version."

Awesome to hear! Even though, like I said, the Media Blasters release had the OAR version, it was definitely cut in parts with tons of issues on the print. So this is truly exciting! Cannot wait! I will still hang onto the DVD for the meantime in case the special features are not carried over.

Has he considered just licensing the extras from the UK dvd release?:

Short of being charged too much, the work is pretty much already done for him!

C'mon Scorpion! Do do this half-assed if you don't have too. I'd pay @ $20 to $25 if this had (the above) extras; without them it would be more @ $10 to $15.

But in the end, isn’t picture and sound quality more important than extras, if new extras cannot be created? Plus now I can use the bitrates meant for the extras to be used to maximize the bit rate on the film.

I have a feeling Scorpion is only giving Blu-ray treatment to future titles, not to already existing ones. I'd love to be proven wrong, though. Savage Streets would be awesome in high-def.

I doubt they'd fill the BD-50 though with just the movie only. As in, I doubt the movie would take up all the space.

They don't put them all on BD-50's either. I'd be happy with just the commentary track and featurette ported over. Otherwise, I may still have to hunt down a copy of that DVD afterall.

I emailed them about the possibility of upgrades, and this was the response:

It depends on a title by title basis, if they sold well on DVD, then it is a consideration.

Thanks for the update NoirFan. Now we know there's a possibility of Scorpion going back and doing Blu's for their earlier releases. I know they've done HD masters for a number of titles and always thought it was sort of a waste if they never intended to go Blu with any of them. I hope they find a good film-based source for HUMONGOUS and re-do it.

Glad to see day of the animals and grizzly are coming to bluray. Hopefully they fix the flickering on Grizzly. The less said about the DVD transfers of Day of the animals the better... I've always wanted to see death ship too so this is perfect!

But how much bit rate will it take up to literally put the DVD QUALITY extras on the blu-ray, much less a mono commentary track? The point is: he doesn't have to create any new extras... they are already done for him. All he has to do is license the extras (which amount to 3 or 4 things) from Nucleus Films and Wala! It's done!

I agree with you completely, I'm just citing his apparent philosophy. We'll have to see about the other titles.

The fun thing about the Nucleus dvd is that the print is damaged, wich suits the movie just too well. It would be fantastic if there was going to be an option to view it damaged and 'clean'

For a "damaged" print it sure looks pretty damn good. I know it looks way better than the Japanese DVD (since I have both of them)... just compare the shower scenes in both. At least on the UK DVD you can tell what's going on.

BTW, it's nice to see another CG member posting in the threads (I go by another M word).
