Yeah I don't get it at all either. On my first viewing, I went in expecting a terrible movie and was very pleasantly surprised to find that not only did I love it but that it's also very well made and respectful to both franchises. It fits both the Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th franchises so well. Pretty shocking considering director Ronny Wu wasn't a fan of either franchises and never saw any of the films. That film could have really gone south and luckily it didn't. In my eyes anyway.

Best kills and pacing are on the boat IMO. The shot of the Statue of Liberty and arrival in Times Square are great moments but you also have the poorly placed flashback and ridiculous ending while they're in the city. I do like how sleazy Hedden makes the junkie rapists sequence though. He somehow manages to make you root for Jason there.

Super cool to see it on film and before it played they screened all the original trailers from parts 1-8 (also on 35mm so that was pretty cool to see). I had never seen all the trailers edited together in sequence before, it's a riot to watch. The voiceover narration gets so repetitive it starts to get pretty funny, the audience was loving it.

"Weekends are a good time to escape to the woods, unless the weekend begins...with Friday...the 13th...Three times before you have felt the terror, known the madness, lived the horror....but this is the one you've been screaming for... If the memory of Jason still haunts you, you're not alone..."

Amazing.

That being said, I hadn't seen the film in maybe 15 years and was almost immediately reminded why. Goddamn this movie is f*cking terrible. It feels so disconnected with the others in the series, maybe the complete lack of a Manfredini score also had something to do with it but I don't know if I could ever actually sit through this movie again, it felt like a chore in places. It's definitely still near the bottom for me. Too many disposable characters you don't care about, the casting is pretty bad, Jason as a child looks Asian with the shitty makeup, characters are wooden and underdeveloped (and that's saying something for a Friday movie lol), it's just SUCH a missed opportunity all around. Jason is pretty awesome in it, though. That was a lot of fun. Kane Hodder really was one of the best people to ever play Jason.

I went home and watched Part VII after (because it was also one of my least favourites and hadn't rewatched it in years) and I was very surprised by how much I liked it this time around. It's now in my top 5. Mind you, I watched a version that I had downloaded with the gore scenes spliced back in and maybe that made the film more enjoyable? Kinda cool how they did it too it wasn't just a jarring cut but they sorta blended the film with the deleted footage. Mind you the quality is still terrible but it's cool to see some of the deaths how they were originally intended. The skull crush and the sleeping bag kill are FAR more effective in the uncut version.

I found the characters more likeable (much more so than the characters in Part VIII) and it wasn't just murder after murder like in Manhattan. There's almost zero introduction to any of the characters in that film, they're literally just set up to die. For me it felt like a return to form, similar to Part 4 (but not as dark, tonally) and the earlier entries in the series. Tina's telekinesis and connection with Jason is still ridiculous (as is the ending lol), but I found it more entertaining than annoying. Also Jason's makeup in Part VII is just incredible. I think part VII might now feature one of my fav Jason incarnations.

I also was surprised by how much of Part VII was adapted for F13: The Game. The camera angle of Tina when she tries to drive away was very similar to how it looks when you drive away in the car in the game as well as when you play a counselor and hide in a closet. The view is exactly the same when you peek through the cracks.

Then I moved onto Part V (I love Jason Lives and watched it only last year so I decided to watch the Fridays I hadn't seen in a while). Part V is also probably near the bottom for me in the same way that Manhattan is. The story was extremely lacking, too many characters that you don't get to know and are merely set up to die, it's kind of a slog to sit through in a lot of places and I dunno I feel like it was also just a huge missed opportunity. I don't even mind Roy as the killer, it's the movie itself that doesn't really work. I definitely wanna check out the commentary though, because I heard it's a riot.

So in short, pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed Part VII but parts V and VIII are still near the bottom for me, they're pretty terrible all-around.

~Matt
I'm super jealous since Manhattan is one of my favorites. Also appreciate that you took the time to lay out why you dislike it though I personally rate Manhattan above both V and VII. I need to get my hands on an unedited version of VII...

i'm sorry part 8 is bad but it's not the worst of them i think Jason goes to hell is the worst of them. i love freddy Vs Jason as well, it's a flawed film we all know that but it's a fun flawed film and yes it does feel like a freddy film more i do agree on that as well. to be honest i went in with low expectations with it when it first came out because i didn't expect to like it and when i watched it, i was really surprised on how much i did like it.

but part 2 is my favorite one and has always been my favorite one, the best ones for me anyways are parts 1-4 i do love 5 for what it is, having Jason not be the killer isn't something that ever bothered me at all i really don't give a damn about that to be honest. they tried something different and i do give them props for that,

i'm not saying them trying it was a success cause it wasn't but it has got it's moments. the redneck and her son are my favorite part of the film. i don't hate part 6 but it's not my favorite, i do enjoy part 7 a lot but really they needed to get rid of the doctor subplot that felt out of place.

i always did love the Carrie VS Jason part at the end cause it was again something different and for this one i think it hit it spot on for me anyways. 7 is a lot of fun and for me is easily the best Kane Hodder film as well all the ones after that he was in are just plain awful.

i dunno who my favorite Jason is but it's never been Kane Hodder and i like Kane him as an actor and a stuntman as well.though i do love the story he tells about during the filming of i think it was part 7 about him being lost in the woods. the remake i also did like but it's not among my favorite films at all. in fact i have only seen it a couple times and i did buy the blu-ray not that long ago for a few bucks but i haven't watched it yet. though i do think it's far better than the Elm Street remake

Part 8 will always be one of my favorites just because it strikes me as more 80s than the others in the series. And despite most of the city scenes being shot in Canada, just the bit with the Statue of Liberty and Times Square make me like it a lot simply for willing to be so much different from the previous 7. The great cover art and advertising posters help bump it up for me, too. Until New York b!tched about the I love NY stuff, it was out of this world, fantastic. Call me crazy. LOL!

Final Chapter and Jason Lives had Halloween level of atmosphere, the original film with all due respect didn't exhibit much directorial or cinematographer style at all. It was a point and shoot kinda flick.

True. And as Steve Miner has said many times, the lighting on the first film was sub-par in most respects. The night shots in the first film are visually bland (when you can even see them). But the daytime shots in that wonderful location manage to have gobs of atmosphere anyway. Just something about those Jersey woods...

I only own the DVD of Jason Goes To Hell. I’m still holding out for the fantasy of that director’s cut (120 minute cut).

Halloween had less than that(320,000), 20,000 went to Donald Pleasence.

Waxwork Records has a vinyl Jason Lives soundtrack for preorder. It's due for release in October. I got the Electric Purple Lightning option because the other appears to be sold out.

I had the absolute pleasure of attending the Friday the 13th shooting location tour\event in Northern NJ, ran by amazing volunteers at Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco. Everything was ran so professionally and was worth the trip\currency conversion from Canada. So much from the shoot is still preserved and I felt such an amazing buzz from the crowd and staff. My favorite part was seeing the original decapitated Mrs Voorhees head (still in great shape!) the OG Crystal lake sign from the movie, and meeting Tom Savini and Taso Stavrakis. Another cool thing was director Tom McLoughlin just showed up there in the morning, he wasn't scheduled to appear he was just in the area! Had some cool Jason Lives posters he was signing.

I highly recommend if anyone is able to go to the next event do it! the rich history of the camp is truly amazing thing to be apart of and the profits go to a great organization.

I placed an order for parts 1-4 and part 6 on Friday when Part VI went live. I didn’t even know they had issued the Friday the 13th score on vinyl until I saw Part 4 in a shop a couple years ago and by that point 1-3 were already OOP so I figured f*ck it, I’m not gonna bother collecting them because they were going for like $1000 on discogs and well...that’s just insane.

However, now that they’re reissuing 1-3 on vinyl I decided to grab them all. Part 4 still hasn’t sold out and Part V just went OOP but they still had 1 copy left at my local shop so I grabbed it immediately. Just waiting for the other 5 to ship now from Waxwork and I have them all (until they decide to release VII and VIII). The artwork for Jason Lives is just so incredibly badass.

I’m like over the moon that I was given a chance to own them all again, I’ve been kicking myself for missing out on them for years now.

EDIT: wow so the soundtrack for part 1 has sold out again, so glad I ordered it when I did.

~Matt
