Man, I revisit these films all the time! Horror is all year at my house, not just October. I just watched parts 2, 4, and Jason Goes to Hell yesterday on my day off. Nice day off I might add.

1, 2, 4, 6, 7, are favorites
3 and 5 are pretty good
8, 9, and 10 are average
THE PLATINUM DUNE REMAKE SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry for the poor quality picture. I had to use my cell phone and lighting wasn't the best.

Do you know if there is a thread that shows you how to make custom discs and custom movies?

Ehhhh...

Fans love it and many consider it one of the best in the series, but it's not my favorite. To its credit, it is probably one of the most polished and well produced entries, especially compared to the films directly preceding it (whether or not this is a good thing is a matter of opinion). Tonally, though, this one just doesn't work for me. It's got no grit, a sense of humor that isn't half as funny as it thinks it is, and worst of all, little kids. Even the Jason resurrection, which admittedly is neat in a Universal Monsters homage kind of way, is just so goofy and random compared to what we've seen in the previous films. The Jason makeup looks great though, and I'll admit that first kill in the cemetery is tits.

Speaking of tits, as others have mentioned, there are none in this movie. Coming after Part 5, that bugs me.

And I'm sorry, but Jason being held at gunpoint with a track starter pistol... my god...

So yeah. It's not awful and it's a pretty well made movie (I actually think the director is a pretty smart guy who knew what he was doing), but the franchise softens considerably with this one and it just doesn't work as well for me.

So yeah, maybe you'll like it, maybe not. I'm sure you'll find something in it to enjoy though.

I guess you overlooked my most recent post where I said that I'd watched it.

I can definitely see how somebody could dislike the tone of the film. I guess it's sorta like how Bride of Chucky is to Child's Play in the sense that there's much more emphasis on comedy. Maybe it helped that I knew from the get-go that it was going to have that self-aware sense of humour. Otherwise I imagine it would have caught me off-guard and the contrast to its darker predecessors would be all the more jarring.

I just watched The New Blood and although I liked it, I'd have to pick either this or Part 3 as my least favourite in the series so far. It does have some interesting ideas (as absurd as they may be) and Jason is at his most intimidating here, especially when he's unmasked. I just didn't find the characters to be very compelling. It ended somewhat abruptly, too, and the MPAA tinkering is particularly noticeable in this one, even more so than in Part 2. I still had a good time with it in spite of its flaws.

I've come to realise that one of the things I like about the franchise is that, unlike Halloween and Elm Street, it doesn't weigh you down with the expectation that each sequel will strive to shed more and more light on the backstory of the killer. With Friday the 13th, they establish everything you need to know about Jason in the first film and that's all you need to know. Each subsequent film doesn't spend half the running time re-telling the events of the original alongside some new details about Jason's childhood. That's rarely the case with other horror franchises and it can be a real drag when you revisit them.

I'll be busy spending time with my other half tonight, but I'll probably check out Jason Takes Manhattan tomorrow and update you guys with my thoughts then.

I've always said this is one of the things I love about the F13 movies. They know there's little story here and they don't care. Once you are coming up with new things each movie about the killers past and why they won't die and the new way to kill them and how it involves their first born cousin; convoluted mess that's not fun or scary.
[Show spoiler]Jason Goes To Hell is that kind of movie.

I never really got the love for C.J. Graham's Jason. He's just walking around.... constantly. The mask looks oversized or something on his face. Just looks off. Doesn't really remind me at all of 2-4's Jason.

BTW, what scene do you mean by Jason held at gunpoint by a track starter pistol?

I agree about Jason's mask. I think it is actually larger and much more circular than oblong. The mask in Part 3 has the opposite problem but works better because Jason doesn't look like a bobble head.

Dan Bradley played Jason during the daytime stalking / paintball scene. He's portlier than C.J. and I swear the mask looks worse during these sequences. C.J. wasn't anything special but I did enjoy some of his movements; his body turn when he is interrupted hacking up the grave digger is good.

As for the pistol, that's what the guy uses when he's trying to get Jason out of the road. It's a fake pistol that's commonly used just to signal; they fire them at the start of races at track meets and so on. Glorified cap gun, basically. It's very distracting and I can't believe they couldn't get a semi-real looking prop gun at the very least. There's air soft pistols that are better than that.

Ah, now I know what you're talking about. I believe that's Tony Goldwyn's acting debut.

A few double-feature packs are coming out on September 8th. Have these been released in the US before? I noticed some were available in Canada, but didn't see them in the US section of the DB.

FINALLY! But where's Jason x and JGTH?

And no, the double features for 1/2 and 3/4 have been out for a while now, but only in Canada.

I was wondering about that too. They are releasing a double pack of that one on DVD the same day, so perhaps the BD will come too.

That would be great but the first 8 are the most important to me. Nice to FINALLY be able to own them on Blu and in actual cases (hate the packaging for the Boxset)....

And if they do release a JGTH/JX double feature....will JGTH be uncut?!

Edit: Where did you find out about these? I typed them in the search field on the top page and nothing came up. I was always hesitant about buying the first two Canadian Double Features because I never knew when/if the others were coming. But now I'm gonna order right away.

One of the things I like about this series is its ability to stay fresh, at least as fresh as a slasher franchise can be. As much as I enjoy A Nightmare on Elm Street and Halloween, they can be a drag to revisit because as brilliant as the original films are, some of the sequels are the epitome of mediocrity. Maybe I'm speaking too soon, I don't know.

The New Blood is probably the one I knew least about prior to purchasing the set so I imagine it'll be full of surprises.

This is why Jason Lives is easily my favorite. It also was the first one I ever watched as a kid.

There is such a tonal shift to New Blood back from the tone of Jason Lives that for a long time I had confused their order and thought New Blood came first.

Watching it, it's amazing that it predates SCREAM by a decade.

While the humor was certainly part of what makes it so good, it also was because it was the first attempt to really mythologize the series. This is what I love most about the 80's horror franchises. I'm not so much about the gore (at all - in fact, I prefer the cut versions), though I do enjoy the "chase" and the "jump scares" - but really what attracts me to them is the mythology. This is also why I love Nightmare 3 and, even though it seems to have it's own mythology, I actually have rather fond feelings of Nightmare 6 which is almost universally disdained (besides the fact they had a great cast in that one, as well).

I really wish the director had done more genre films, he really was quite good - and passionate - about making the mythology around Crystal Lake more solidified and palatable.

I also like Nightmare 6 save for the ending cheese. But when watching it in a marathon I think its so old and redundant at that point. Nightmare 5 feels like an appropriate ending to the series already. Which i also loved. It seems every sequel since 3, they are going to kill Freddy for sure. In five it involved his dead mother and his origin so it already felt like he was dead for good at that point. But Freddy's Dead on its own is a lot of fun.

Friday 6 I think is the last great entry in that series until Freddy vs. Jason (I've yet to see Jason X, though I'm pretty sure I'll love it. I think Fridays 2-6 are all absolutely fantastic. The first is alright. 7 and 8 are OK for fun but probably better viewed separately from the rest (like Freddy's Dead.)

Jason Goes To Hell is alright. I love the remake. It's stupendous.

Is Warner's still releasing 1 thru 8 or did they revert back to Paramount?

If any of these are different from the existing discs, I'll be shocked! I'd wager we'll get an uncut version of JGTH when monkeys fly out of my butt. Or, when the franchise gets abandoned by the studio and an indie label is allowed to touch them and actually go to some effort with the extra features. I keep hoping to see an uncut version of 2, but I know that's far less likely than JGTH since it was never released on VHS or anything.
