• NEW Audio Commentary by Filmmaker/Historian Steve Mitchell and Combat Films: American Realism Author Steven Jay Rubin
• Theatrical Trailer (Newly Mastered in 4K)

B&W 90 Minutes 1.85:1 Not Rated
Screen legend Steve McQueen (The Great Escape, Bullitt, The Getaway) delivers a powerful, gripping performance as a defiant loner whose skills as a soldier make him invaluable to his struggling platoon. In the heat of battle during World War II, McQueen and his fellow soldiers find themselves severely outnumbered as they hold off a Nazi advance along the Siegfried Line in France. Using only their ingenuity and bravery, they must bluff the Germans in order to buy some time…and save their lives. The great Don Siegel (Dirty Harry, Charley Varrick, Escape from Alcatraz) directs the explosive action led by an all-star cast, including Bobby Darin, Fess Parker, Harry Guardino, James Coburn, Nick Adams and Bob Newhart. If they can fool the enemy long enough for reinforcements to arrive, victory is theirs.

I'm down for both releases. I picked up an original still of Laura La Plante and Edward Everett Horton in Poker Faces several years ago and at the time assumed that I would probably never actually get to see the film. I definitely don't mind my assumption being wrong there.

Just looked at the site based on your tip and it appears the first 1940s film from the Universal deal has been revealed too - a pre order is up for Lady In A Jam (1942) directed by Gregory La Cava and starring Irene Dunne.

This was annouced a while back with a "new 2K master", did you decide to go back and do a 4K master instead or was the "2K" a typo?

USA In the Heat of the Night and the two follow-ups

Haven't got a 4K set-up at the moment, and I'm not sure when that will happen (if ever). I haven't yet got In the Heat of the Night on Blu-ray (saw it for the first time, early last year (a one-off screening at the cinema) and loved it. Excellent), and know of the Criterion US Blu-ray as well as KL's 4K Blu-ray/Blu-ray release.

At first glance, to me it looks like it's worth double-dipping (or maybe even triple-dipping if there are exclusive extras). I also checked the Blu-ray.com listing page for last year's KL double feature Blu-ray of They Call Me Mister Tibbs! and The Organization to see if they have their own disc, or if they're on the same disc (appears to be the latter).

Its an exceptional deal for three films and the 4k presentation of In the Heat of the Night is superlative. The other two look pretty good, but I would temper my expectations as to the quality of the movies themselves. They are watchable, but not in the same ballpark as In the Heat of the Night. I probably wouldn't have been compelled to own them had they not come bundled with the original movie.

So at the start of the disc start up of That Man Bolt there is a nice mention to Bill Olsen which I thought was a very classy move from Kino. Not something you often see, but again felt it was nice for Kino to do that for him.

2 Days in the Valley release date still doesn't appear to be officially set.

I know it was originally set for a late 2022 release date, but had been changed to early 2023. Have there been any updates on the status of this blu-ray?

I want this movie on BD bad. It's definitely the best of the Tarantino knockoffs IMO and actually creates its own vibe, plus it features so many fantastic performances. Spader, Aiello, Jeff Daniels, Eric Stoltz, Glenne Headly, and Charlize Theron are all in top, top form in this and it features a lot of great smaller roles for 70s stalwarts like Paul Mazursky, Marsha Mason, Keith Carradine, and Louise Fletcher. Also has Greg Cruttwell of "Naked" basically playing the same character as in Mike Leigh's masterpiece, just in an upscale form. Really cool film that I grow fonder of on each rewatch.

I agree, Spader is one of my very favorite actors, but that aside this is a really good film with as you said a really strong cast and its own vibe and feel. I am ecstatic to get rid of the DVD when this finally comes to fruition. One of my most wanted easily. Have you ever seen the movie The Stickup with Spader? Thays another DVD I'd like to get rid of but I doubt it will ever get a blu.

"The Stickup" is a really good one, I have seen it, great reunion with "Jack's Back" director Rowdy Herrington. Spader owns, dude was such a great actor in the 80s and 90s, worth watching in every single role. The late career Spader TV stuff kind of sucks, but if you want a modern actor who really was the truth without any of the formal award show recognition, it was Spader in the 80s and 90s IMO.

I loved it, I don't know many people who have seen it and I used to lend the DVD out quite a bit to friends. It has the DTV feel and budget but I thought th story was great and it was a really nice find.

My top wants, announced what seems like ages ago, are still waiting for release dates for:

Needful Things 4K
Night of the Hunter 4K
Mr. Wong, Dective Set

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe these are all from the most recent MGM deal, which has been exausted. In fact, the Mr. Wong Set was the very first announcement. And there are many titles that since have been given release dates or have already been released.

I know this is sometimes how Kino does business, and that's not a bad thing. Perhaps the delays mean the masters are being tweaked, and with extras, for the best possible release. I can certainly wait for that.

On the other hand, no news doesn't always mean good news.

Anyone else waiting for news about their anticipated releases that haven't been heard about in a while, from any Kino.deal?

Needful Things is a long way off. Per the KLI it would most likely come out Spring of 2023.
