The Dry looks like it could be juicy, but it's another title that I would have to see first.

Of course it's nonsense. When someone rents or borrows a disc they have access to the content for as along as they possess the disc. When someone purchases a disc they have access to the content for as long as they possess the disc.

Your idea of a permanent license for purchasers is absurd and you clearly pulled it out of thin air. I never thought that you would believe in something so ridiculous.

Maybe time to give it a rest now?

What's your stance? Should someone be able to keep a copy after they sell the original disc? Does a purchase give everyone who has ever owned a disc a license to play the content on that disc whether or not they still own it?

I have never backed up any of my films but I have zero problem with those that do. After all, they haven’t robbed the studios, they have PAID for said copy.

Millions ripped their CDs to MP3 when the Iriver (and later IPod) came out. They then sold the CDS. Same thing.

The only issue I have is with people who pirate films directly without paying a dime. Those that buy a film then sell it after making a copy are not the problem imo.

I mean, who goes through life sticking to the letter of the law?

Film fans who buy discs in the first place can do what they like for me. They are supporting the industry.

Barely. I suspect the vast majority who buy, rip, and sell are buying used copies. And since they aren't keeping the discs they aren't reducing the number of copies in circulation (which would cause more new copies to be made and sold).

I think I bought this on iTunes before buying the Blu Ray and now I'll go looking for the UHD.

In terms of replay value, ... Ive already seen it lots of times.

I tend to say "Shark vs Bikini Girl" is my favorite genre. Maybe I just like monster movies.

That’s a big presumption. It might be that many are moving to digital (saddos) and just want a back up for their old collection.

I was disappointed with Crawl. Much preferred Rogue several years earlier.

That's even worse. Those people aren't supporting the disc industry at all anymore.

Well,

Better or worse we can't control trends and fashion. We can't hold the tide.

At my age, I don't want to because it would be wasting time. There's plenty of new releases, I will get them while I can.

If I think about my first setup, .... things are only much better.

(My first setup that was all mine was a 13" TV with a mono VCR.)

Crawl is kinda like Shallows with alligators. It is also in my opinion of of the best looking Blu-ray’s I have seen with reference audio to boot. I will double dip with it at some point to see how much better it can get. Dry is not a thriller, so I don’t know if I would call it juicy. Not a lot of action, just a really well told story with two mysteries woven together.

Hey,

I said it was "bad" for Alchav to claim keeping a backup of content he sold. I stand by that. I have my own notions of what's right.

I also suggest it is "bad" to not seek the best quality version of any content you are interested in reproducing. Get the best and enjoy.

My comment set off a lot of back and forth about intellectual property and copyright that could possibly never ever end.

I have some cleaning of my own hard drives to do but I do have a standing order that all content on there would be decrypted. Currently my own media server is in storage and I find that I don't miss it yet. I was inspired by the notion of going green and my NAS units lack effective power management.

I move to grant Alchav a special master in this case so that we can all ignore it for the foreseeable future.

Since this has been going on for several days now I'll add my 2 cents.

If someone buys a disc, makes a copy, and then sells that disc, that is piracy.

My reasoning. If you sell a disc you are stating that you no longer want the content of that disc. To retain a copy would be illicit.

How many here own a ATV4K and a Mac computer? Do you have Display HUD on your ATV4K? If not would you be interested in installing Display HUD?

Last night in prime time (2100 EDT) started watching latest episode of The House of Dragons on Shield Pro and it looked really soft so I switched to the ATV4K, turned on Display HUD and continued Dragons. HUD showed network bandwidth as ≈ 15 Mbps, video bitrate as ≤ 5 Mbps, source as 3840 x 2160, display as 1920 x 1080. Next I tried The Rings of Power via Prime Video. HUD showed network bandwidth as ≈ 100 Mbps, video bitrate as 20 Mbps, source as 3840 x 2160, display as 3840 x 2160. The Batman via Vudu, HUD showed network bandwidth as ≈ 15 Mbps, video bitrate as 4 Mbps, source as 3840 x 2160, display as 1920 x 1080. The Batman via Movies Anywhere, HUD showed network bandwidth as ≈ 100 Mbps, video bitrate as 25 Mbps, source as 3840 x 2160, display as 3840 x 2160.

As can be seen, large differences in network bandwidth between end user and CDN. Would like to see the results from other users.

Today I plan to get on my High Horse, go to Audio Advice in Pineville NC and check out the new Sony VPL-XW6000ES video projector. Too bad they don’t have the JVC DILA-NZ8 on display. One poster made a post with pictures made with a phone camera of their projector screen using a XW7000, here.

Well .... I have the M1 Mac Mini and the ATV4K. Maybe I can help. I don't think I have HBO Max. I have AT&T Fiber optic internet at my Florida home which I think comes with HBO Max. I'm not sure ... I'll figure it out eventually.

I Alchaved Goodnight Mommy on Prime. I have the other version of Goodnight Mommy (2014) and have to assume this version was made specifically for people who don't like subtitles (can't read) or people like me who are in love with Naomi Watts though I have to say it wasn't a glamorous role for her.

I find so many things available on steaming actually belong there. They might be worth watching but they aren't worth owning. I'm not out looking for The Desperate Hour today. I Alchaved that one from Kanopy and I guess it's on other streaming sites now like Hulu.

Nice. Audio Advice seems like a great place.

I wish you could get a demo of the NZ8. You are welcome to come here if you want. I'm not bringing it anywhere.

I'm surprised if they don't have one setup or can't at least set one up.

I've loved Sony projectors and feel almost bad about cheating with the JVC but the JVC is reference in every way and comes with an amazing AutoCal program that works great. Sony should definitely steal that idea. It's wonderful to be able to recalibrate from time to time. I have about 900 hours on mine and calibrated a few days ago. I can say the recent calibration improved the image which was already great.

True, but it’s another potential reason. You are preaching to the converted about the latter point.

At the risk of sounding pretentious, it really is a massive shame that you saw the American version of GOODNIGHT MOMMY first.. don't get me wrong, I was very much looking forward to it as I think Naomi has an amazing track record of bringing foreign films to audiences that don't like subtitles. My wife is American and falls into this category.
IMHO there is no need to watch the German version of FUNNY GAMES as the original director has essentially made a shot for shot remake with both Watts and Tim Roth both playing to the strengths of the original performances.
Conversely, I love it when a movie is remade of a flawed original so that the new makers can retool.... but

In the case of GOODNIGHT MOMMY, the original Austrian production is such a masterclass of "film" making that this "made for TV" version really lived down to it's pedigree. This new version is nothing more than an interesting little time waster with a plot that's a cut above.... I finished it late at night with the intention of going to bed right after...
I ended up screening the Austrian Bluray right after to cleanse the pallet.... right from the opening establishing shot in glorious scope, you know which version is superior...
