Debut Press Release:
[Show spoiler]
Quote:
The American Genre Film Archive (AGFA) is excited to announce its initial slate of theatrical and home video releases in collaboration with Seattle's Something Weird. After a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2015, AGFA purchased a 4K film scanner to create new digital transfers of titles from the Something Weird library. AGFA will begin distributing their new transfers theatrically and on home video in the summer of 2017.

Each home video release will feature a main title, a "b-side" bonus feature, and trailers and shorts from the Something Weird archive. Select releases will include interviews and commentary tracks with Something Weird’s Lisa Petrucci, filmmaker Frank Henenlotter (BASKET CASE, FRANKENHOOKER), filmmakers involved with the movies, and more surprises along the way. Mike Vraney founded Something Weird in 1990. Sadly, he passed away in 2014 after a long, heroic battle with lung cancer. Legendary exploitation warlock David F. Friedman deemed Vraney "the forty-first thief," which was the ultimate compliment to this exploiteer, who dedicated his life to unearthing and preserving the most radically insane exploitation and horror movies of all time.

AGFA has partnered with Something Weird’s Lisa Petrucci, Mike Vraney’s widow and partner, to redistribute titles from the massive 35mm film collection.

"Our mission hasn't changed, it has evolved," says AGFA Director Joe Ziemba, "AGFA will always be dedicated to preserving and sharing 35mm film prints. But by scanning these fragile elements and distributing them as new digital transfers, we are making the movies even more accessible than ever. At the same time, we are helping Lisa Petrucci of Something Weird ensure that Mike Vraney's legacy will continue to grow."

The American Genre Film Archive (AGFA) represents the world's largest theatrical catalog of exploitation cinema. Their home video line presents a diverse selection of movies, ranging from new preservations of classics from the vast library of Something Weird to the wildest in shot-on-video (SOV) titles. Vinegar Syndrome’s sister company, OCN Distribution, is thrilled to be representing this diverse and unique home video line!

Formed in 2009, the American Genre Film Archive (AGFA) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit located in Austin, Texas. AGFA exists to preserve the legacy of genre movies through collection, conservation, and distribution. Housing theatrical and home video distribution arms, a 4K film scanner, and over six thousand film prints, AGFA will never rest until genre movies rule the world.

I wonder if VS will be the ones to distribute these? They've put out a couple of AFGA titles on DVD.

That won't be happening, for a variety of reasons.

I would imagine these will go out either through Drafthouse or a separate AGFA line through MVD, but that's pure supposition.

Some good titles there, but I'd have preferred an OLGA double-bill.

One of my friends used to have the entire Something Weird catalog on DVD. He's since upgraded to Blu-Ray, so I'll have to point this out to him...

Great to see another 70s bigfoot-related title coming. I'm just waiting on Bigfoot: Man or Beast?, The Legend of Boggy Creek, Mysterious Monsters and Manbeast: Myth or Monster? now (I know Synapse are working on Creature from Black Lake). To be honest, for a couple of these I'd probably just take nice legit DVDs like VS' In Search of Bigfoot. I'd say Boggy Creek and Mysterious Monsters probably have the best chance of making it to Blu.

The film that captures my interest most of this announcement is Voodoo Black Exorcist (1974).

The AGFA/SW kickstarter did say this:
Quote:
AGFA will partner with Drafthouse Films -- the distribution arm of the Alamo Drafthouse -- to share these movies in theaters, on home video, and on VOD platforms.

This is great news.

I have been watching Reel Wild Cinema with Sandra Bernhard on Something Weird’s youtube channel. This was a fun series and it showcased a lot of SW’s library of films.

I have a nice stack of SW dvds, but I’ll upgrade when the right titles come out.

Hoping for blu upgrades the Touch of her Flesh Trilogy and possibly Sin in the Suburbs and the Swap.

I believe that SIN IN THE SUBURBS (which stars Audrey "OLGA" Campbell) will be coming from the label that's releasing a bunch of Joe Sarno films on BD.

Joe Ziemba talking about AGFA's scan of late 70s Bruceploitation "The Dragon Lives Again". Could they release this or are the characters (Popeye, James Bond) too much copyright trouble?

Just for (deeply disturbed) laughs, I want to see a 4K transfer of "Fun in Balloon Land" come out of this experiment.

Something Weird owns the rights to Bummer! (1973). I'd love to see that one come to Blu.
