Wow! I gave up hope long ago. Seemed like there were expensive music rights issues or something. So stoked about this, love this movie!

Assuming they keep the original music, you can *almost* say that Eddie Van Halen is a cast member as well, seeing as how all the music in the film was done by him (and would later become actual VH songs during the Hagar era).

Heck, even the end credits song sounds like a B-side instrumental version of "Jump"

I like it more that Crowe’s subsequent films as a director.

Ilan Mitchell-Smith should’ve become a big actor. Phenomenal in this, Sidney Lumet’s DANIEL, and THE CHOCOLATE WAR

Man, between RAD getting released and now The Wild Life, its at least been a good year for Blu Ray releases

Here's hoping all the original music comes with this release as it's a great movie perfectly shaped by the EVH score.

I'm worried that they don't respond to any of the Facebook posts asking about the soundtrack. It seems like something they would mention if they had it intact.

The EVH score has been present on all home video releases. The songs that were replaced were ones by Madonna, Prince, and Jimi Hendrix, as I recall. Some of the EVH music was re-used, as I recall, in some of those spots where the pop songs were removed.

Universal's "Vault Series" DVD-R of The Wild Life used the alternate soundtrack which had music replacements.

The alternate soundtrack replaced these songs:
  • Charlie Sexton's "It's Not Easy" [used when Eric Stoltz tells a bowler "Lady, please don't disturb league lanes"]
  • The Three O'Clock's "I Go Wild" [used when Jenny Wright tells Lea Thompson "You said you wanted an adventure" when they are in the car together]
  • Madonna's "Burning Up" [used when Ashley St. Jon is stripping during the strip club scene]
  • Little Richard's "The Girl Can't Help It" [used when Kitten Natividad is stripping during the strip club scene] *
  • Jimi Hendrix's "Hey Joe" [used when Ilan Mitchell-Smith is laying down on the pavement in front of the car] **
  • Prince's "Dirty Mind" [used when Christopher Penn is carrying beer and straightening the poster on the wall during the party scene at the end]
  • Billy Idol's "(Do Not) Stand In The Shadows" [used when the Michael Jackson impersonator with the Pepsi can is shown on-screen during the party scene at the end]
  • Peter Wolf's "Oo-Ee-Diddley-Bop" [used when Sherilyn Fenn tells Christopher Penn "I just think you'd tell everybody" during the party scene at the end]
*Little Richard's "Heeby Jeebies" used during the fight at the strip club was not replaced.
**Jimi Hendrix's "Foxy Lady" used during the Ilan Mitchell-Smith boombox bowling scene was not replaced.

Song Replacements:
  • Charlie Sexton's "It's Not Easy" was replaced with silence.
  • The Three O'Clock's "I Go Wild" was replaced with Eddie Van Halen music.
  • Madonna's "Burning Up" was replaced with Van Stephenson's "Make It Glamorous".
  • Little Richard's "The Girl Can't Help It" was replaced with Little Richard's "Slippin' And Slidin'".
  • Jimi Hendrix's "Hey Joe" was replaced with Eddie Van Halen music.
  • Prince's "Dirty Mind" was replaced with Eddie Van Halen music.
  • Billy Idol's "(Do Not) Stand In The Shadows" was replaced with Eddie Van Halen music.
  • Peter Wolf's "Oo-Ee-Diddley-Bop" was replaced with Eddie Van Halen music.

When Universal created the alternate soundtrack for VHS/Laserdisc/TV broadcast, they also revised the end credits and removed the songs that were replaced on the soundtrack. For some reason, Universal's "Vault Series" DVD-R didn't use these revised end credits even though it used the alternate soundtrack.

VHS/Laserdisc/TV Broadcast End Credits
Only 11 songs are credited (it's missing the 8 songs that were replaced).

Theatrical End Credits
19 songs are credited (the 8 songs highlighted with a white box were replaced on the alternate soundtrack).

The good news is that the HD broadcast version of The Wild Life has all of the songs intact so hopefully that means the blu-ray release will too. I don't think Kino would have licensed the movie if they were going to get stuck with the alternate soundtrack because the original soundtrack is a big part of the movie's appeal.

That is some awesome information whiteberry

Despite being an 80's movie fanatic, The Wild Life is one of those movies I only discovered about 8 years ago or so. It's so awesome to think you've seen every great 80's movie out there, and then you find something like this movie that you'd never seen.

Having seen SKOW a bunch of times, it was interesting to see Eric Stolz and Lea Thompson in a different movie, but still playing lovers. Chris Penn gave a great performance I felt, and the interactions between Rick Moranis and Jenny Wright are great.

The Wild Life IS an 80's Teen movie, but it has a much different feeling to it than the more popular teen flicks of that decade.

I agree, it's one of the main thing that people associate with the film. That's why I find it strange that they don't mention it in any way in their marketing copy, and were ignoring questions about it. That definitely leads me to infer the negative rather than the positive.

FWIW, when I asked them about the soundtrack replacement on their release of "Junior Bonner", they said they just work with the master they're given, that it's up to the copyright holder that they license the film from. (That example has specific circumstances that I don't think apply to "Wild Life", so it's not entirely apples to apples.)

[Thanks for the detailed description of the cuts, BTW, I love having one reference point for all the info.]

Bren waiting for this since forever!! Two things...

This is the movie that got Lea Thompson BTTF, but not because she was in it, but because she was friends with Eric Stoltz.

The soundtrack will very likely be filled with music replacements. Not many studios bought the music rights of around this time for other than Theatrical, Cable TV, and Free TV. I will be shocked if it's the Theatrical version, bc going back 20 years later to try and secure (and find) the rights and rights holders is an expensive pain in the ass... but I'm still happily buying it.
