Actually, we've been very lucky in recent years to see a number of films come to Blu-ray and DVD with original theatrical soundtracks restored. Titles like FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH, THE THING (1982), BABY IT'S YOU, FRENCH POSTCARDS, NIGHTHAWKS, SIXTEEN CANDLES, WEIRD SCIENCE and PRIVATE SCHOOL come to mind.

The soundtrack will very likely be filled with music replacements. Not many studios bought the music rights of around this time for other than Theatrical, Cable TV, and Free TV. I will be shocked if it's the Theatrical version, bc going back 20 years later to try and secure (and find) the rights and rights holders is an expensive pain in the ass... but I'm still happily buying it.

[Thanks for the detailed description of the cuts, BTW, I love having one reference point for all the info.]
I'd advise a bit more patience for everyone here, before assuming the negative outcome. We have nothing definitive either way. They're aware of the music changes that have been present on earlier video versions and it's safe to assume they want the original songs in there as much as we do, if possible.

I don't want to sidetrack this conversation, but you might be able to help me resolve something I've never been able to pin down. filmaf.com lists both the DVD and the blu-ray for "Baby It's You" as "(audio edited)", but I've never been able to find any other reference for this. I'm guessing it has something to do with Bruce Springsteen songs? (I've never actually watched the movie, but I'm a Sayles fan, and I did pick up the blu-ray at some point during an Olive sale.)

So, can you tell me what the cuts were? And you're saying they're restored for the blu-ray, that filmaf.com just got it wrong? (I can totally believe that somebody just cut-and-pasted sloppily, or made an incorrect assumption, I'll take your word for it.)

I'm a big BABY IT'S YOU fan. The Bruce Springsteen songs have actually been present in all video iterations of the film. I retained the DVD because it contains the "home video" soundtrack and the replacement songs are actually other, real period songs. The Blu-ray has the theatrical soundtrack.

Hang on...I'll retrieve the info on the edits.

Here's a 1989 Washington Post story on the belated home video release of BABY IT'S YOU due to the aforementioned music licensing issues.

I had forgotten, but I actually posted about it on another forum in 2016.

In the "rescored" BABY IT'S YOU:
* "Shout" becomes "Surfin' Bird"
* "A Lover's Concerto" becomes "Sweet Talking Guy"
* "A Hazy Shade of Winter" and "At the Zoo" become "I Call Your Name" and "Do You Wanna Dance?"

I really appreciate that, it's a small thing but it scratched a long-standing itch. Thanks to you, sorry again to everybody else for going off-topic.

I work at one of the studios in Legal / EST / Music Replacements. Like I said, if they cleared all Theatrical/ OV tracks, it was painful and expensive. I can't imagine KL paid that... They looked at the available masters.

Maybe they were able to grab the Skinimax one. But I wouldn't count on it.

Bought Day 1!

I caught this movie in HD a few times in the middle of the night on tv about 8-10 years ago and it had the version that had less Van Halen songs in it. The version with more VH in it was a low quality VHS. I think I read somewhere that the version with less VH music was the original, but Eddie was asked to put more music in it when it was released on video. I have no idea idea where I read that but I know I did.

I can tell you that KL will not be paying for the music and has not, nor do I believe that other third party licensees such as Olive paid for the music for things like BABY IT'S YOU and FRENCH POSTCARDS. If the studio handles and makes it available, then WILD LIFE will have the original music.

Yes, the alternate soundtrack has a little more Eddie Van Halen music but it's very confusing because:
  • In some scenes, two different pieces of music from Eddie are used. For example, in the peeping tom scene, the alternate soundtrack uses Eddie's "Peeping Tom" but the original soundtrack uses different music from Eddie.
    • The music used for the peeping tom scene on the original soundtrack is on the alternate soundtrack. It is used to replace The Three O'Clock's "I Go Wild" used when Jenny Wright tells Lea Thompson "You said you wanted an adventure" when they are in the car together.
  • In some scenes, music from Eddie is reused on the alternate soundtrack. For example, Eddie's "Peeping Tom" is used again on the alternate soundtrack at the end of the movie to replace Prince's "Dirty Mind".
  • In some scenes, music from Eddie is used on the alternate soundtrack but it is silent on the original soundtrack.
I'm in the process of writing up a very detailed look at both soundtracks that I'll post here this weekend. It will include both the pop/rock songs and the Eddie Van Halen music.

In a perfect world, Kino would include both soundtracks but I can't remember if they've ever done that on a blu-ray release. I plan on asking the Kino Lorber Insider to do this after I have finished writing up my detailed comparison so that he/she can see there is some value in including both soundtracks on the blu-ray if they are able to.

Thanks, whiteberry...didn't realize that they flipped around the EVH score as much they did between the theatrical and home video versions. The Insider may surprise me and contradict me here, but I'd say it's doubtful that both soundtracks will be included on the KL disc. They'll use the track(s) provided by Uni. If Uni provides the theatrical track, KL would likely have to source the "home video" track (for your proposed dual soundtrack release), which I don't foresee, and use of that track would likely need to be approved by Uni.

This movie is essential 80s viewing, right up there with Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Breakfast Club, and Say Anything.

No matter the version released I’ll happily purchase it to go along with the original laserdisc and Theatrical Cut HD bootleg blu-ray sitting in my collection!

Anyone who hasn’t seen this is in for a real treat.

Hey Kino Lorber, are we any closer to getting a release date? We can only keep it casual for so long...

• Interview with Co-Star Ilan Mitchell-Smith
• 9 Radio Spots
• Theatrical Trailer
• Dual-Layered BD50 Disc

The Wild Life stars Chris Penn (Mulholland Falls), Eric Stoltz (Bodies, Rest & Motion), Lea Thompson (SpaceCamp), Jenny Wright (Near Dark) and Ilan Mitchell-Smith (Weird Science) as teens on the verge of adulthood who discover that playing grown-up can be a confusing game. Older men, singles apartments, all-night parties and falling in love bring heartbreak and hilarity. Also featuring Randy Quaid (The Long Riders) in a special appearance as a Vietnam vet who teaches one of the kids an important lesson and Rick Moranis (Spaceballs) as a wacky nerd-on-the-make, this coming-of-age story is a humorous, bittersweet look at the best and worst times of everyone’s life. Screenwriter Cameron Crowe’s follow-up to his smash hit Fast Times at Ridgemont High, The Wild Life was the second and final film directed by veteran Hollywood producer Art Linson (Where the Buffalo Roam).

Indeed, R.I.P. to the great McBeardo. I was lucky enough to get him to contribute to a couple of upcoming Fun City releases. There would have been many more collaborations...

Re: THE WILD LIFE, from what I've been told, this will include the "home video version" soundtrack only.

Unfortunately, the Kino Lorber Insider confirmed the blu-ray will have the alternate soundtrack:
