April 2023

Previously released

Quote:
"Distribution Solutions, a division of Alliance Entertainment, is pleased to announce a physical media partnership with Powerhouse Films' UK-based label Indicator.

Distribution Solutions will handle sales, distribution of all Powerhouse Films sell-through releases in the US and Canada.

"We are very excited to be in business with Powerhouse Films," states Distribution Solutions President, Ben Means. "Partnering internationally with a film label like Indicator, which has such a driven passion for physical media, helps expand the quality and coverage of classic films we distribute to the US and Canada."

Powerhouse Films has an extensive collection of classic films that includes limited-edition box sets and single-title releases, as well as standard-edition reissues of limited-edition titles that have gone out of print, such as John Carpenter's Christine, Jacques Tourneur's Night of the Demon, and Dennis Hopper's The Last Movie.

"We're thrilled to be bringing our unique blend of cult and classic cinema to audiences in the US and Canada in partnership with the fantastic team at Distribution Solutions," says Powerhouse Films' co-founder, Sam Dunn. "We've been working hard unearthing and restoring a raft of incredible titles in order to put together a schedule that will surprise and delight even the most adventurous viewer."

Celebrated filmmaker Guillermo del Toro added his praise for the label, stating "Indicator lovingly curates and enshrines obscure, precious gems for the obsessive collector and the genre connoisseur."

The first physical Powerhouse Films releases distributed by Distribution Solutions will be available for purchase January 2022."

Anyway, I'll be curious what they actually have the rights to release in this country. They have a lot of releases I've wanted, but not enough to import them - unfortunately most of those I think are rights-prohibited here (ex Harryhausen, Hammer, stuff Scream's released like The Tingler or Shadow of the Cat). This country really lacks a release of Night of the Demon, but I already have some other European release.

Interesting that they are expanding here. I guess it worked for Arrow. Let's see how it goes for 88 Films and Indicator. Either way, they do good work, so this is good news.

I'm all for another great UK label expanding into the US since I don't import movies. But I am curious what will be available for license here. It'll be great if they could get a Harryhausen set for us since no one else has released one yet. I don't see them doing the Hammer films that Mill Creek unfortunately already released.

If it’s anything like Arrow I’ll still end up buying most of mine from the UK since their sales seem to end up being cheaper than US prices even with shipping.

If they could release some titles from their Columbia film noir sets here, that would be great news.

They seem to have a pretty good relationship with Sony and there are a ton of Sony titles that haven't been released here and a lot of labels seem to be slowing down with their Sony output. I really hope they release the Deadly Affair here.

I dunno. I just hear people say it all the time in reference to something being really good. Maybe I’m using it wrong (I’m not one of the “cool kids”) but I’ve heard cringier stuff here before, so

Anyways, probably cringe phrases aside, this is fantastic news. I’ve been region free for years and always intended to pick up a number of titles (Christine, Seventh Voyage of Sinbad, Night of the Demon, Body Double, Columbia Noir sets… coincidence that most are Sony/Columbia titles), so if they get releases here, guess I’ll finally have to pick them up.

I wonder how the prices will compare. Arrow's US prices are much higher than their UK prices.

Night of the Demon (though I question what the rights situation is in this country, seems like that would have been a no-brainer for a long-ago release if there wasn't some big issue ala Wade Williams or Susan Hart), Seventh Voyage of Sinbad and then all the stuff TT released seem like the most likely candidates. It just doesn't seem as "sexy" as their release patterns in the UK. But, who knows. Arrow eventually started having roughly the same number of quality US only releases as UK only. 4K helped, of course.

Hopefully they are able to license movies from Sony for the American market because I have a long list of Columbia wants. A few of my most wanted:

You Were Never Lovelier (1942)

Gidget Goes Hawaiian (1961) / Gidget Goes To Rome (1963)

Who's Minding The Mint? (1967)

Seems Like Old Times (1980)

Loverboy (1989)

It was a copy and paste error. The Seems Like Old Times trailer should have made it obvious.

I wouldn’t really say that’s true - I think pound for pound there’s no better time to buy an Arrow release nowadays then the US versions during BN’s 50% off sale. The days of Arrow’s sales possibly having anything like a bargain especially as the average cost of a release has slowly ticked uo are literally years ago at this point. Whereas Indicator post-VAT reduction has not I felt been particularly ludicrously priced.

Indicator is a fantastic label with a knack for putting out obscure masterpieces, definitely one of the best around.

I wonder if they’ll release any of the Twilight Time movies they released abroad. I doubt Twilight Time is keeping many of those rights.

Ordering Arrow's released from their UK site, prices between 5 and 8 pounds, even with the 10-15 pounds shipping charge, is much cheaper for me to buy if I'm buying at least 4-5 releases. 5 Arrow discs at B&N's will be $100 plus tax. Buying 5 from Arrow's UK site averages around 50 pounds, which is under $70.

At release date, they're about $28 here, and I think only about 15 pounds in the UK, which is comparatively much higher.

Perhaps you and I are buying different films and yours are never on sale on Arrow's site? Or maybe like you said, those times have passed, I don't know.
