Nice. I own all of the Saturn's Core titles so I can save my money for the Flash pre-order next weekend.

Both films have an audio commentary track but they screwed up and put the same audio commentary track on both films. Not sure if there was anything else wrong with it, though.

I'd been thinking of making a thread for Kani Releasing. One of the most interesting labels for Asian cinema in North America, maybe the most interesting at the moment. And I haven't seen any discussion of them. Perhaps there is some buried in the VS thread...
I haven't actually seen any of their titles, but I'm thinking of ordering the whole run of them on October 1st when What's Up Connection hopefully goes up. Their whole mission statement/release philosophy reminds me a lot of Third Window Films in the UK (my favourite label). The two Masashi Yamamoto titles are the most intriguing to me. |

But Videophobia, Being Natural, and Cain and Abel are some of my favorite partner releases. |

I enjoyed it. It's short, barely longer than an hour. And if you like gory, gross-out films this is an easy one to recommend. However, the film is non-linear. At the beginning it feels like one scene of random violence after another that don't connect, but when I caught on that the story was jumping around in time, I started to pay more attention and put things together. A second viewing would help clear up some of my confusion about the big picture the story is telling. There's some creative filmmaking going on too- including a bullet time sequence.

I agree with the Third Window comparison—both choosing titles very with curatorial intent & bringing modern Asian cinema to the West. TWF is one-man team (Adam Torel) and Kani a two-person team (Pearl Chan & Ariel Esteban Cayer), all three are experts. Fair Game (1986), released by Dark Star, is great. If you like movies similar to The Hitcher and Road Games with mostly dialogue free suspense scenes and intense chases, this movie is made for you. These films often get compared to Hitchcock movies, despite Hitch never making exploitation films like these. But there's a precision to how they construct the suspense that feels entirely Hitchcockian.
Fair Game has one scene I would say is unforgettable after you see it: [Show spoiler] This one is an absolute must if you're a VS fan. It would fit in perfectly with their mainline releases. |
