USA Requiem for a Heavyweight (1962)

Mill Creek will be relasing the classic boxing film Requiem for a Heavyweight (1962), which stars Anthony Quinn, Jackie Gleason, and Mickey Rooney among others. The screenplay was also written by Rod Serling. No release date has been posted yet, but it should be either December or early 2023.

Quote:
Fictional aging heavyweight Louis "Mountain" Rivera (Anthony Quinn) is felled by young Cassius Clay, the future Muhammad Ali, and finds his professional career over. His manipulative manager (Jackie Gleason) owes money on bets placed against Rivera, and convinces him to become a wrestler. Humiliated by the notion, Rivera examines the few options available in the afterglow of a boxing career. Rivera is broken and battered, but he continues to have the support of his trainer (Mickey Rooney).

The movie was previously released on Blu-ray in Australia (region free), as a double-feature with The Harder They Fall.

Huh, I expected this would warrant a solo release from someone other than Mill Creek.

Great supporting performance by Madame Spivy as a ruthless promoter/gangster.

1962 was one of the greatest years ever in the leading actor category.
Quinn's magnificent in "Requiem" but the competition that year was pretty astounding:
Jack Lemmon "Days of Wine and Roses"
James Mason "Lolita"
Anthony Perkins "The Trial"
Kirk Douglas "Lonely are the Brave"
Randolph Scott "Ride the High Country"
Joel McCrea "Ride the High Country"
Laurence Harvey "The Manchurian Candidate"
Sean Connery "Dr. No"

And from that impressive list of contenders only Lemmon managed to snag an Oscar nomination. The other nominees were Burt Lancaster("Birdman of Alcatraz"), Peter O'Toole ("Lawrence of Arabia"), Marcello Mastroianni ("Divorce - Italian Style") and ultimate winner Gregory Peck ("To Kill a Mockingbird").

What a year! And the Best Actress race was just as intense.

douglas and lancaster are against type in those 2 performances, both subdued, both superb. Lonely are the brave is one of my favorite movies, incredibly overlooked by public and critics.

i dont like harvey, but I agree with your bigger point, it really was a good year for actors

Great film! I have the region-free twofer. Superb score by Laurence Rosenthal, as well.

Cover looks good, and much better than the duel film release. Now the question remains how the encode and compression will be.

POS cancelled my order claiming I asked for a refund that I didn't ask for. Now says out of stock.

I will avoid them in the future.

Don't want to have to get Mill Creek's dumpster fire.
