Default It's not a UHD release, but...

Ordered. Ever since In Bruges these guys have some chemistry in my opinion. Blind buy. Haven't read anything about it.

It's a masterpiece, man. And a dark mirror to In Bruges, because so much of that amazing chemistry is now turned antagonistic. It's legitimately hard to bear at times, when we last saw them together being so compassionate for each other's demons. Very inspired casting them again.

What a great film, one of the best I've seen all year.

MDW and I loved the story, performances and cinematography, but when the film ended, we had to climb under the covers and cry until morning.

This is not the feel-good movie of the year.

I say it's pretty unlikely given Disney's track record.

From Disney? I doubt it. If Criterion was somehow able to build a relationship with Disney (despite their release of Wall-E seemingly being a one-off situation), then maybe there's a slight chance of them being able to do a 4K release down the line, but I still wouldn't count on it.

Since the 1080p blu-ray has gotten a good evaluation, what do we think is the better watch, the blu-ray or the DV 4K stream?

i did some back and forth comparisons on the first few minutes between the two on my setup: 77" G2 with HT-A9 speakers, with the disc played on an oppo udp-203 with the oppo upscaling to 4K and wrapping in DV, and the digital copy (DV 4K) played on an apple tv 4K

my initial impressions are that the digital copy looks sharper and captures finer details (e.g. aerial field shots, cracks in house walls), while the disc audio has a bit more ambiance and detail in the audio (e.g. seagulls and grass moving).

the visual sharpness is apparent enough for me on my setup that for my first watch i'll be watching the 4K DV stream

and for those curious about bitrates (over the first few minutes):
video:
disk: ~37Mbps AVC
itunes: ~17Mbps HEVC
MA: ~24Mbps HEVC

audio:
disk: ~4Mbps TrueHD 5.1
itunes: ~386Kbps ac-3
MA: ~256Kbps ec-3

yup, movies anywhere! and for those also curious (like i was), the MA code that comes with the blu-ray redeems as and ports from MA as HD even though the only digital buying option i saw on itunes being 4K DV. so to get the 4K DV stream you would need to explicitly purchase that version digitally

Just because a film is available to buy in 4K from iTunes does not mean the code from a Blu-ray will redeem in 4K. Even some 4K UHD discs ship wth HD codes.

Ah thank you for that information. I am planning on showing it to someone who hasn't seen it yet, so I'll likely go with the stream. It's a pity that there's no 4K blu. The difference between MA and iTunes is a bit odd. I'll go with the MA version now they have an app on LG TVs (although I haven't used it before). Assuming it supports Dolby Vision.

Watched this a couple of nights ago and thought it looked fantastic. As good as it gets for Blu-ray.

The film itself was very interesting. The first hour or so didn't pull me in, and I didn't feel all that invested. However, the second hour really ramps things up, and the last thirty minutes were easily the best moments I've seen from a film in 2022 and made me want to rewatch the entire film again. I'm not sure if it's the best film of 2022, but I can't think of anything that was better, so I guess it is the best film I've seen from 2022. Fantastic film. I do think Brendan Gleeson's character should have eased his way with ending the friendship. Maybe take baby steps instead, of going cold turkey which starts the film. With that
[Show spoiler]I really thought the two characters would make amends by the end, but it seems like their "war" is only beginning

I just compared the blu-ray (via a rip) and the 4K stream (via dubious means) head to head. No question--the stream benefits dramatically from the increase in resolution. Zooming in on stills I took in VLC, the difference is very noticeable. They're leaving a lot on the table by not releasing a 4K disc. I'm going to add the lossless track to the 4K stream file.

Can you redeem the included digital copy directly thru iTunes/Apple to get the 4K? Or is it like The French Dispatch where you can ONLY redeem via Movies Anywhere?
