It's just a shame they didn't port over the old "Surround" track (even lossy would have been appreciated) and the utter lack of any bonus features at all. They are one of the most bizarre major studios around. They can do great releases, average releases, and sometimes truly poor releases. This just happens to be one of the "average" releases. Paramount just sadly really didn't put any effort into this release. I'll predict that Dragonslayer won the coin toss? |

One can argue about the actual rating (I think 1.5 is well deserved by today's standards though), but the review is spot on really IMO.
Make no mistake and just in case the caps didn't show that already: This is a bad disc with shitty pq due to an extremely dated master - same as Bagger Vance. The only thing that looks decent are closeups really and even then we're still talking relatively poor because poor compression often strikes (often times baked into the dated master I guess). With long shots the pq loses it completely every time and those are just fubar by BD standards. The only 2 things this release has going for it are the nice steel and "better than the DVD" really. People can find "the PQ to be excellent" all they want, but objectively that's a ridiculous statement really, sorry. Mind you that I didn't expect anything better anyway once the aspect ratio has been brought up, which indicated dated master, so I knew what to expect, but I wanted the steel anyway, so stuck with it. |

Have a question, looking for opinions...
Which came first...the CG animated knight-in-shining-armor in the opening title sequence for the Amazing Stories anthology television show, or the CG animated stained-glass-knight-in-shining-armor in Young Sherlock Holmes? If the former, why would that not be considered the first "CG" character vs. the latter? Didn't The Adventures of Andre and Wally B. precede both? And wasn't "Bit" sort of a character in Tron? |

Glad I bought mine. It's a huge improvement on the crappy DVD transfer. |

I picked up a minty fresh copy at Target yesterday, but after reading the review, I was quite bummed out. So it's not as bad as the review makes it sound?

1.5 seems pretty low. I thought it looked ok and more detail than a DVD. I'd say 3 would be more fair.

No, it is not that bad. It is average at best. This is a very old master and there is some light DNR applied, but I didn't think it was bad.

The Home Theater Forum review is spot on, this disc is a travesty. I wanted this film so badly in HD (and restored obviously), but that's not the case here. Upon watching it, I found at times that the disc almost looked like an upscaled DVD, devoid of color, and does indeed appear to have DNR baked deeply into whatever dung heap Paramount decided to pull this from. Packing this disaster in a steel book could very well be looked at in this case like putting lipstick on a pig.

YSH on Blu is no masterpiece, but "travesty" is not the right word. The Olive release of THE HALLELUJAH TRAIL is a travesty -- honestly unwatchable. My 4K projector produced a perfectly pleasant YSH image on my 120" screen. I had to turn off THT on my 65" TV before the intermission; I don't think any studio could produce a worse Blu-ray experience if they tried. It went straight into the rubbish bin -- I couldn't bring myself to trade it in for someone else to buy. YSH will see many repeat viewings, and a newer release would have to be substantially better in terms of PQ or extras to get me to repurchase. I am mostly happy with the one we got, and the old DVD is being recycled. |

I watched part of the movie last night. And you're right, I didn't notice any edge enhancement either, or DNR, for that matter. There was quite a bit of grain, in fact, although as you pointed out, the image is on the soft side. It's obvious right away that it's from an old master, but fortunately, it's nowhere near as bad as that review made it sound. Another poster mentioned that during the scene where Rathe and the older professor make a bet about Holmes finding the fencing trophy there is some noticeable wobbling or camera shake. I can confirm that. I don't remember it being present on the DVD. Perhaps, someone else can check.
