First time watch and goddamn was it a fun time. Looks incredible in 4K and as not normally a musical fan the songs were fun and not overdone. Like the Christmas vibes as well, think this will become a yearly holiday watch.

Wanted to start the new year with an epic western film. It was my first time watching The Big Country, and this film did not disappoint one bit.

Burl Ives’ Oscar win for Best Supporting Actor in this film was well deserved. Such an amazing performance.

I finally saw it for the first time three years ago, but had a different impression.

For 50 years "The Big Country" (1958) had been on my list of films I wished to see. I really like westerns and this one has a great reputation. It was directed by one of the all-time best, William Wyler and has some of my favorite actors in it. Was it worth the wait? Quite frankly....no. In my opinion this is an "Orca-grade" movie ("Orca" is at my center for comparison purposes) .... dead average, 5 out of 10. It isn't a bad film, it just isn't very good. It is epic in length at almost three hours, but nothing very epic happens in it. The script tells a tired tale of two families with patriarchs that hate each other in a conflict about water for their cattle. This basic plot had been used many times before. Nothing fresh or innovative happens, and it ploddingly unwinds to a predictable end.

The lead characters are one dimensional and drawn as either good or bad in black or white with no shades of grey. Burl Ives plays a character that is the only exception, and is real, with those grey areas. He won a Best Supporting Oscar for playing it.

What didn't work? This script really was only worthy of being produced as a TV movie of the week. It is said that the principal cast members had trouble with Wyler demanding retakes and providing frequent rewrites. Gregory Peck wouldn't talk to him afterward for some three years. Peck might as well have phoned his performance in... but my guess is that Wyler is to blame for this. It is also probably the weakest Jean Simmons performance I have ever seen.
