Default Flesh And Fantasy (1943) coming from Vinegar Syndrome

Quote:
A trilogy of tales of love and death.

First, a drowning during Mardi Gras leads to a bitter woman’s masked reckoning. Next, an upstanding citizen is driven to madness and murder by a palm reader’s prophesy. Finally, a circus tightrope walker is haunted by dreams of a mysterious woman and his own death.

One of the first horror anthology films made by an American studio – and two years before DEAD OF NIGHT – award-winning director Julien Duvivier (PÉPÉ LE MOKO) delivers FLESH AND FANTASY, three strange and at times surreal stories of the supernatural with an all-star cast that includes Edward G. Robinson (Soylent Green), Barbara Stanwyck (Double Indemnity), and Charles Boyer (Gaslight), who also co-produced. Stunningly photographed by Oscar® winner Stanley Cortez (THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS, THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER) and lushly scored by Oscar® nominee Alexander Tansman, Vinegar Syndrome Labs presents the Blu-ray debut of this landmark in 1940s genre filmmaking, newly restored in 2K and featuring insightful critical appreciations along with rare archival materials.

directed by: Julien Duvivier
starring: Edward G. Robinson, Barbara Stanwyck, Charles Boyer, Betty Field, Robert Cummings
1943 / 94 min / 1.37:1 / English Mono

I thought this was with Severin. Regardless, though, I am definitely down for it.

As Barndoor said in the VS thread, the people who made the commentary said to expect it from Severin along with another Universal film, but it looks extremely likely every Severin Universal film has gone to VS following the whole Jaws 5 debacle.

During their last podcast, Severin seem to imply the next Severin Kids release would be a movie licensed from Universal ("it will show we have not been sued by Universal").

Not familiar with Flesh and Fantasy, but a Vinegar Syndrome flavored Warner Archive Collection (i.e. with equally high quality restorations) is something I can heartily support. Will definitely be picking this up.

Wish they could have included the excised fourth segment in the extras, but still bought regardless!

As the footage ended up being made into a different released movie (1944's "Destiny"), that certainly makes sense that it wasn't included. Unless it's the same rights-holder, I guess.

Should be Universal for both.

Maybe they got over it lol. Or maybe they traded them to VS for Blood for Dracula.

Yes, Destiny is also a Universal movie but there appears to be some legal issue preventing it from being released on home video.

This movie was where Billy Idol got the inspiration for his 1984 single Flesh for Fantasy.

I know DESTINY has been MIA, but I'm not sure (or hope) that would preclude the original footage shot for FLESH AND FANTASY popping up...

Wow! Didn't expect this from VS!

Their website says it will be released in a few weeks, however I cannot find this as a preorder anywhere but VS.

Is this typical?

The first segment in particular looks amazing. That said, I don't rewatch a lot of movies pre-1960s (I know, shame on me). Can't decide whether to blind buy or keep an eye out for a TCM airing.

Yeah. Standard edition sent to retailers will be released a bit later after being available exclusively from Vinegar Syndrome (and possibly a few smaller boutiques like DiabolikDVD).

Yes. The standard edition should show up at Amazon/Bull Moose/etc in about 2-3 months. For example, their Road House 4K UHD was released last November via their website and the standard edition is now up for pre-order at Bull Moose with a release date of January 31.

a 3 month delay if not getting direct from VS, eh?

re: Road House. VS has it on sale for $45, and Bullmoose is selling it for $30.

As much as I want Flesh and Fantasy, I can wait to get it cheaper later..
