As much as I want Flesh and Fantasy, I can wait to get it cheaper later..
VS releases have slipcovers (or slipcases, or magnet clasp boxes, depending on which line the item is in) if those matter to you.

Standard retail releases do not, hence the price difference.

In the case of Road House, the limited was a fancy magnetic box, which is why the price differential was greater.

Same. Good to know there's another label interested in releasing classic American cinema, even if that interest is limited genre titles such as this.

Until today I thought Vinegar Syndrome was an "adult" label (ahem) but it seems their catalog has grown more varied recently.

No, you've just been wrong/misinformed, or haven't been paying much attention. They've been releasing cult movies and genre oddities for many years now.

Actually, this is under one of their many sub-labels, Vinegar Syndrome Labs. Looks like a new sub. The spine number is VSL-002. Curious as to what VSL-001 will be. Very cool to see them branch out into vintage/classic horror.

EDIT:

Per their website:

Quote:
Welcome*Vinegar Syndrome Labs (VSL)*to the VS Sub-Label family! As with each of our sub-labels we are hoping to expand and defy expectations with the diversity of films we restore and release. As the name implies, VSL will serve as a kind of testing area for releasing genres and eras of film that one might not immediately expect to come from VS. The ultimate objective of VSL will be to see if these types of films will find an audience, and if so, pursue and release more of them…and even if not, still serve as a means of restoring more of the weird, rare, and unusual movies you might not expect from Vinegar Syndrome.

VS Labs is such a great idea. I'm definitely picking this one up.

It's almost like I said I thought. I wasn't knocking them, and I know I had them pegged wrong. But yes, it seems they're going more mainstream than their earlier releases would indicate, a result of relatively recent big studio licensing deals.

I hope they can give us the super-elusive Universal chiller THE CAT CREEPS (1946).

I could be wrong, but I'll be surprised if the next VSL was also vintage horror, since it sounds like it's a vehicle to throw various things against the wall and see what sticks/sells.

....been waiting for years for this to receive a blu-ray treatment...an anthology of eerie tales with atmospheric cinematography..another anthology movie with Edward G Robinson is Tales of Manhattan made in 1942 concerning a cursed tailcoat which brings misfortune to its wearer...however its 20th Century Fox so not sure who would be licensed to release it...

VS starting to put out golden age titles... whoa! I hope this will not just be a one-off experiment. So looking forward to this.

I know this is not the answer you want to hear, but likely no one, since
  • it's owned by Disney,
  • no licensors other than Criterion are currently able to get Fox titles
  • Criterion is currently putting out less golden age titles (let alone deep catalogue titles like "Tales of Manhattan"),
  • "Tales of Manhattan" is a little known film which didn't get any love from Fox during the DVD era and was merely released as part of their DVD-R Fox Cinema Archives series, and
  • currently only an old TV master exists, hence the release as part of the Fox Cinema Archives series.

I think it is highly unlikely we will see any further golden age Fox titles on home video. I for one am currently buying up all the titles on DVD (!) I want to have before they become unavailable. Sad, since before the takeover, it seemed realistic that we would be getting rare stuff like Preminger's "Centennial Summer" (1946) eventually (without a home video release anywhere in the world even on VHS due to rights issues regarding the music I believe).

..thanks for the useful info...it seems that the Fox cinema archives DVD-R of Tales of Manhattan was released back in 2013..there is a french dvd edition but that would suffer from PAL speed-up and possibly have forced subtitles, so the US disc would be the one to purchase especially since it seems unlikely Criterion will release a blu-ray....at least the DVD-R has decent reviews on amazon regarding video quality...
..so i suppose the question now is whether its made on demand or would amazon send a 10 year old disc , which would not be ideal considering the shorter life span of DVD-Rs...

Yes, it used to be TV fodder, a long time ago.
