Marantz Unveils New ‘Cinema’ Series Of Xbox Series X And PS5-Friendly AV Receivers And Amps

Marantz has taken the wraps of a five-strong new range of AVR receivers and amps packed with the cutting edge technologies today’s ever-expanding home entertainment world demands. Including bug-free support over their HDMI loop throughs for both 8K video and, more importantly in today’s media landscape, the 4K/120Hz and variable refresh rate features so important to today’s cutting edge gaming world.

The five new models from top to bottom are: The AV 10 Processor (£5,999/€6,999/$7,000) and AMP 10 (£5,999/€6,999/$7,000) combi, the Cinema 40 AVR (£2,399/€2,799/$3,500), the Cinema 50 (£1,699/€2,000/$2,500) AVR, the Cinema 60 (£1,249/€1,350/$1,700) AVR, and the Cinema 70s (£849/€1,000/$1,200).

The AV 10 processor and AMP 10 16-channel amp

The flagship AV 10 and AMP 10 are built on Marantz’s HDAM technology (featuring Hyper-Dynamic Amplifier Modules claimed to be capable of operating with almost zero background noise) and are designed to partner up to become the heart of a reference-level entertainment system that would give you 16 channels of amplification, and seven HDMI inputs complete with 8K and 4K/120Hz compatibility.

The Cinema 40 AVR will provide an 11.4-channel configuration with a healthy 125W of power per channel, while its premium design will feature an aluminium front panel to give it a look befitting of its position so high up Marantz’s new range.

The Cinema 50 AVR keeps the 11.4 channel count, but drops the power per channel to a still impressive 110W. Marantz describes this model as ‘perfect for discerning movie and music enthusiasts seeking to create an immersive home theater with rich tonal qualities and lifelike dynamics’.

The Marantz Cinema 40

The Cinema 60 drops the channel count to 7.2 and the power per channel to 100W, and is described as ‘ideally suited for dedicated home theater applications as well as multi-purpose media rooms of any size.’ A version with DAB radio reception built in will be available in the UK and Europe for £50/€50 more than the standard Cinema 60.

The Cinema 70s, finally, boasts a slim design capable of pushing out 7.2 channels of sound with 50W of power each. And for the avoidance of doubt, yes, even this entry level model still carries 8K and 4K/120Hz VRR support.

As well as lots of channels and oodles of power, all of the new Cinema range will decode the Dolby Atmos and DTS:X object based sound formats, as well as offering room optimization across multiple inputs, HEOS multi-room support, and streamed playback of personal music libraries, podcasts and so on via Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and AirPlay 2.

The Marantz Cinema 60.

The latest AVRs also seek to increase their appeal to custom installers as well as end users by including both voice control compatibility and a brand new high definition graphical user interface.

The Cinema series is set to go on sale at the end of October, kicking off with the Cinema 50 and Cinema 60 models.

Marantz is touting these products as the most powerful and customizable system to create your ultimate Home Theater. The AV 10 sports ALL immersive surround CODECs including Dolby Atmos, DTS:X Pro, Auro 3D and IMAX Enhanced. The AV 10 includes support for 4 independent subwoofer outputs which allows for independent delay and level trim and EQ. This is a first for any Marantz product as prior models like the AV8805 support up to two independent subwoofer outputs. The only other AV processor in this price range that supports 4 independent subwoofer outputs is the Anthem AVM90. This is an incredibly useful feature for anyone wanting to integrate 4 subwoofers in their system to achieve the very best bass response across all listening seats.

The AV 10 has just upped its room correction game with FULL DIRAC support (upgrade option) in addition to simultaneously supporting Audyssey MultEQx. This is the first time we've seen a product support both room correction systems. It begs the question if this spells the end of Audyssey as we know it IF consumers will prefer DIRAC as their go to room correction system. We've heard rumors that the user could use a combination of both Audyssey and DIRAC in conjunction but it's unclear how that would work. Is it possible a user can DIRAC calibrate their system and then apply Audyssey Dynamic EQ and Volume features? We aren't sure and will leave that topic open for debate until we can confirm with Marantz at CEDIA in a few weeks.

The AV 10 is said to have 7/3 HDMI input/output, with ALL inputs supporting 8K / 60Hz and 4K / 120Hz passthrough. What is more shocking is that Marantz has allegedly redesigned the GUI (Graphical User Interface) for 4K/8K TVs. Most competitors simply don't support GUIs in their products in favor of web interface or app control. It takes a lot of processing power to support a GUI for high resolution applications so this speaks volumes for the tech baked into this product.









Behind its trademark Marantz styling the AV 10 incorporates 15.4 channels (15 assignable plus support for 4 subwoofers) of audio decoding/processing. On the video side, the AV 10 is 8K compatible with several support features.

However, that is just a tease as to what else is included. Here are some highlights.

Surround Sound Support: The AV 10 supports most surround sound formats including Dolby Atmos, DTS:X/DTS:X Pro, Auro 3D, IMAX Enhanced, and Sony360 Reality Audio.

HDR Support: HDR10/10+, Dolby Vision, HLG, and Dynamic HDR pass-through

HDMI 2.1: Includes HDMI-eARC and Gaming Support (4K/120Hz, 8K/60Hz, VRR (Variable Refresh Rate), ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode), and Quick Frame Transport (QFT).

Hi-Res Audio: Support is provided 24-bit/192kHz audio playback. Digital audio format support includes MP3, WMA, WAV, MPEG-4/AAC, FLAC, ALAC, and DSD (2.8/5.6MHz).

HEOS: Multi-room wireless streaming

Wireless Music Streaming: Amazon HD, Spotify Connect, Pandora, TuneIn, and more… Roon Tested.

M-DAX 2 Compressed Audio Enhancer: This feature improves the quality of compressed audio formats such as MP3, Windows Media™ Audio, or AAC. The M-DAX2 recalculates the frequency range to provide a more detailed and clearer sound.

Wireless Connectivity: Bluetooth, AirPlay 2, Wi-Fi (Wired Ethernet is also included if needed).

Wired Connectivity (Inputs): The AV 10 provides both analog (5 total including one balanced XLR) and digital optical/coaxial (2 each) audio inputs as well as one MM (moving magnet) phono input.

Wired Connectivity (Outputs): The AV 10 provides 3 HDMI outputs for connection to video displays (TVs, monitors, projectors) and both RCA and XLR audio outputs for all channels for connection to compatible power amplifiers and subwoofers.

Voice Control: Alexa Built-in, Google Assistant

Smartphone App Control: iOS, Android

Audyssey Room Correction Built-in: MultiEQ XT32, Dynamic EQ, Dynamic Volume (connection to a power amplifier required).

Tip: The AV 10 will support Dirac Live room correction via a future firmware update (expected to be available in March 2023, a fee may be charged). The inclusion of Dirac Live will allow users to fine-tune speakers connected to a receiver to more accurately match the acoustic environment of the room they are placed in, providing a more well-rounded music listening experience with better accuracy, larger sweet spot, more precise voice intelligibility, as well as deeper, but less boomy bass.

Marantz's new AV10 15.4 channel pre-pro processor is scheduled to launch by the end of December, 2022 along with Marantz’s new AMP 10 Reference 16-channel 200-watt-per-channel amplifier that pairs beautifully with the AV10 Pre-Pro.

I'm lightly considering the AV 10 to replace my ancient but still rockin' Integra DTC 9.8 pre/pro but $7K is a LOT of cheddar.

I haven't followed processors/AVRs in the last so many years, but this is huge! It's the reason why I stuck with Yamaha and went with a CX-A5200 a few years ago as it was a tweaker's delight. I was able to squeeze out that extra DB when calibrating each sub. I otherwise hadn't seen this feature in other AVRs/processors to that point, and now there's a model with 4 independent sub controls.
