Fritz Lang on Blu-ray

Well, his first 2 films have only had SD release. Scaled up for Kino's box set, but not real HD

Yep. Guerrilla is Fox so it's sadly locked in the Disney vault for now, but there's an HD version streaming at Amazon. It's a shame nobody licensed it for a BD back when the Fox catalog was available. I guess the boutique labels decided it was just too obscure. There's an old Fox MOD DVD still available, although who knows how many more copies are out there, I doubt they're burning more of them anymore.

Liliom has an OOP Kino DVD. The Blue Gardenia has an OOP Image DVD. No idea who controls either one now.

Yep, the German BD from Universum is definitely superior to the Criterion BD, for both image and sound.


I have it, but it's OOP. There's a newer issue in Germany from Atlas which is still in print. I'm not sure if they're the same disc.

I think Fox might actually hold the best condition materials for Liliom. Fox put out the best DVD I'm aware of for Liliom. It was released as a bonus disc to Carousel 1956 and it is an extra on the Carousel 1956 blu-ray (in SD). The Kino disc is really bad (it's practically just a VHS on DVD).

Really? That's great to know, thanks! I don't own Liliom yet. I should buy a copy of Carousel then?

There are some older Lang titles coming out on BD in Germany at the moment.

Ostalgica have just released Hilde Warren und der Tod (1917) on Blu-ray, and next month they are releasing Pest in Florenz (1919). Both were were written by Fritz Lang and have optional English subtitles for the German intertitles.

UCM.One/ Soulfood is releasing Lang's Das wandernde Bild (aka. The Wandering Image/ The Wandering Shadow, 1920) on Blu-ray in Germany next month. According to a post elsewhere on the forum, the version included in the Kino box set is an upscale of their old DVD release, while this new release appears to be based on a genuine HD restoration done by the Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau Stiftung. So far nothing about whether it includes English subs or not.

Yes, that's the version of Carousel that comes with Liliom. Before Kino started putting out Blu-rays, they were actually a pretty bad company. Most DVDs they released before 2010 are really bad.

The Carousel 2-disc DVD set is dirt cheap used, I'll pick that up instead of Kino's Liliom DVD.
