Because white people don't care.

One problem people have with the film is that it conflates various incompatible racial and religious stereotypes from various completely different cultures - sort of the equivalent of having a stereotyped Jewish character being a watermelon eating, voodoo sacrificing pig farmer who lives in the Vatican and calls gentiles massa but otherwise only speaks in Latin.

I think with most American films, particularly regressing in time, accuracy in depicting foreigners wasn't really a concern and was often intended to be disrespectful to make them seem even more odd. Who knew anyone would care?

After seeing what some people eat, around the world, on various cooking shows, they might as well have been eating monkey brains.

It is given a pass because white privilege is real and pervasive.

This sketch is from 1984.

Two years later in 1986 I got my first job out of college because I was white.

Pretty much almost any scene that had Gedde Wantanabe in it in the 80s is frowned on, today, LOL. (Except for maybe "Vamp").

"Sixteen Candles" and "Gung Ho" catch hell nowadays.

On the OP's tech front, it sure is pretty funny now to see Michael Douglas in "Wall Street", talking on that GIANT walkie-talkie 'cell phone', LOL. It even joked about that in the sequel.

I never thought "The Blues Brothers" were a good idea.

In real life, Bruce Willis' stint as a 'blues singer' was both laughable and oh-so-cringy at the time, but seems downright deplorable today. He's up there in his t-shirt, tight jeans, and white sneakers, with his dumb hat and sunglasses and harmonica, bringing The Temptations on to guest as HIS backup singers, while he butchers classics. You can visibly see in their faces that they'd rather be ANYWHERE else. Then, he belts out his fake, canned-spam 'blues'. That's the kind of rubbish they were making fun of in the brilliant, "Ghost World", where Steve Buscemi loves collecting real old blues records and this girl takes him to a modern 'blues' concert with some preppy white, Mark McGrath-frosted-tips looking dude, belting out how he's been plowing behind a mule and picking cotton all day long, LOLOL...

I don't really want to delve into the whole discussion around Sixteen Candles because it's been done to death, but I always laugh at these Buzzfeed-style videos where a couple of millennials sit down and discuss all the things that don't hold up nowadays about that film. It's always that and Mickey Rooney in Breakfast at Tiffany's.

What's funny is that anyone here on these message boards has probably seen a hundred films that are even more offensive. Can you imagine seeing one of these puff piece videos where they sit down and watch Mandingo?

After listening to these people talk for 15 minutes, I think I'd rather be lowered into a snake pit naked, than spend a night watching movies with these prudish shallow freaks.

Me neither, partly because I've seen similar videos like that before. Where the younger people react to an old movie or whatever, I can't remember which one it was, and say how "dated" it was because it doesn't fit with today's culture. It was cringy. If I remember what video that was, I'll post it. Not because I agree with it, but just to make fun of it.

These kind of videos are I suspect aiming as much at hate watching as anything, playing up the most clichéd obnoxious media liberial personas possible.
