All this controversy. I'm gonna have to get the disc and see for myself.

I think that idea was to make Heat look 'punchier' for modern audiences and for better or worse, that's what they've done.

This is actually the opposite of two other discs I compared today, the Japanese xXx disc, with the new Sony 15th Anniversary Edition. The newer Sony disc is the much more refined of the two, contrast and colour wise.

**edit** The audio's been mastered louder on the new disc. I have both releases running simultaneously on similar Sony players, and switching between HDMI inputs, the audio's obviously lower on the Japanese disc.
Wondering the contents of Japan first version disc 2, only bonus ?

Not being rude but there's tons of feedback posted in this thread and the US thread, plus caps on caps-a-holic. Just get to reading!

Maybe this can be handy (output from foobar's dynamic range meter):

Old european version (VC-1+TrueHD):
DR17 -0.10 dB -24.08 dB 2:50:25 ?-heatEUR.C
DR21 -0.10 dB -28.21 dB 2:50:25 ?-heatEUR.L
DR27 -3.58 dB -37.65 dB 2:50:25 ?-heatEUR.LFE
DR21 -0.10 dB -27.72 dB 2:50:25 ?-heatEUR.R
DR25 -1.46 dB -36.05 dB 2:50:25 ?-heatEUR.SL
DR25 -2.45 dB -35.41 dB 2:50:25 ?-heatEUR.SR

Old japanese version (H264+DTS-HD):
DR16 -0.10 dB -23.10 dB 2:50:26 ?-heatJPN.C
DR18 -0.10 dB -25.34 dB 2:50:26 ?-heatJPN.L
DR28 -0.10 dB -34.82 dB 2:50:26 ?-heatJPN.LFE
DR19 -0.10 dB -25.87 dB 2:50:26 ?-heatJPN.R
DR24 -0.10 dB -31.20 dB 2:50:26 ?-heatJPN.SL
DR24 -0.10 dB -31.54 dB 2:50:26 ?-heatJPN.SR

New remastered edition (H264+DTS-HD):
DR16 -0.50 dB -23.11 dB 2:50:18 ?-heat4K.C
DR18 -0.50 dB -25.37 dB 2:50:18 ?-heat4K.L
DR27 -0.50 dB -34.83 dB 2:50:18 ?-heat4K.LFE
DR18 -0.50 dB -25.90 dB 2:50:18 ?-heat4K.R
DR24 -0.50 dB -31.19 dB 2:50:18 ?-heat4K.SL
DR24 -0.50 dB -31.53 dB 2:50:18 ?-heat4K.SR

I have not decided yet, which version sounds better as I don't have proper audio equipment. But 1dB in dynamic range might be noticable, and I feel I might choose the old TrueHD track and turn up the volume a bit...

What do those numbers mean? There's a wider difference between the first set and the second set for the original TrueHD version than on the other two.

The first dB reading is peak level and the second reading is RMS, basically how low below 0dB (reference level) on average each channel goes, the greater the difference between these two readings, the greater the dynamic range, which is rated at the beginning of each channel. A DR rating of 14 or above is considered good, as this is a film soundtrack, the DR is going to be greater than that of a CD (for example most modern CD's produce a DR rating of around 7), all of these releases are good, but the best in terms of DR is the TrueHD track, although the LFE channel's peak isn't as high as the other releases, which is interesting, as many DTS tracks do tend to feature a higher level in terms of LFE.
