Well if that's not utterly nonsensical then I don't know what is...

Damning a release on the basis of one review seems presumptuous at best but each to their own!

Not everyone cares about special features and bonuses. All I care about is having great picture quality, aspect ratio/framing and the right cut of the film. I think Indicator got the aspect ratio/framing right. Unfortunately, they don't have the right cut of the film in great picture quality and they didn't bother to make a hybrid where they spliced in the inferior picture quality scenes only where they had too and used the superior picture quality for the majority (i.e. The Wicker Man).

Update Oct 26, 2018: I was wrong. This is a great set as is evident from the overwhelmingly positive reviews. Merging the two scans would have been a Frankenstein due to the numerous differences. I cancelled my order initially, but I'm re-ordering based on what I've read and seen since this was released.

I think that you're underestimating how poor this would look on viewing - particularly in scenes where it would jump back and forth between the two sources. In the cases where I've seen this done, it mostly was for specific whole scenes, to minimise visual disruption for the viewer. I'm not sure if this could be effectively done in this situation, because (as I understand it) there are multiple instances where scenes have been shortened etc, meaning there would be very frequent jumps between quality.

Ultimately I think that would be more distracting, but that's just my opinion.

It was returned to Columbia and that's the best version of the long version Sony has to work with now. We're lucky to have the long version at all! I don't know what the BFI used for its restoration, but I assume it is this fine grain print.

One has to wonder what Columbia was thinking back in the day, chopping up the original negative to make the shorter version, but that's what happened.

None of this stuff has dampened my excitement for this release one bit. I hope Indicator starts sending them out this week.

Is there anything on the packaging of this set that alludes to what occurred (Columbia cutting the negative down), some sort of disclaimer? I think a simple disclaimer would put many people's concerns on a backburner so that they can just enjoy the films "as is" without thinking about the "what if's". Some people here are taking this a bit too far (sticking with DVDs, boycotting, etc). I mean, to each his own, but...

I think this will be very good in motion.
I'm still just as excited to be getting this and as soon as it can get to me.

Likely, the information about the Columbia Pictures nonsense that occurred 60 years ago is addressed among the Extras included in the set.

As to Screen Grabs & Frame Grabs etc, they do not always tell the story.
I think we will be very happy with this package,
and I feel that it will far excel my old Sony DVD !!!

Makes me wonder if the images posted in the Mondo review are the best they could be?
..your above screen grabs really confirm how good the French disc looks..

would anyone know whether this indicator package will contain the complete prologue on the longer version (I think there was some discussion earlier on this thread about a missing line in the prologue on one of the versions)....as in the case of people who own the French disc this package would only be worthwhile for that and for the book/extras..(for example , that rare Dana Andrews interview was not included in the French disc )

I completely agree. This is going to be a great release. And everything you want to know about the various releases will certainly be thoroughly covered in the extras and commentaries. Fans of this movie upset over the screen grabs who are canceling their orders really need to put everything into perspective here. Indicator bends over backward to give us the best image, sound and extras in their releases, and I'm sure they used the best elements available for all the versions featured on this set. I'll bet ALL of the versions will be very satisfying to watch.

I'm also still excited for this release. Indicator stated that there will be a 2-disc non-LE edition following, so that might be better suited for some.

PS: Thanks to all who recommended the BBC Ghost Stories for Christmas DVD set, I'm thoroughly enjoying them!

They all look pretty good to me. And this version, along with the shorter version, along with the BFI restoration, will all be available on the Indicator set. Can't wait.

I imagine they will start shipping in the next day or two.

Bear in mind that this has been Indicator's biggest seller by far if the increased amounts of limited edition units is anything to go by. I bet there's a lot of them to pack!

Yeah apart from the ones they will personally send out from the office (like a handful) I do believe they may now have a distribution deal that does this for them
