I still have to watch Bigfoot Family, but that was never in the running to be my release of the year given that it's cropped...
Itís cropped but that didnít remotely taint my enjoyment at all ó if you didnít know it was cropped you might not even notice anything amiss. Itís an excellent film, both content-wise and 3D-wise, and you should see it stat!

Brazil My little summary of movies watched in 2021

These were the movies I saw from the list in 2021:

Bigfoot Family:
A great use of 3D resources in an animation, but inferior to the first movie.
Film Rating: 7.4

The Croods A New Age: Fun animation with solid 3D from start to finish. Excellent depth, shine and good times with things coming off the screen.
Film Rating 7,6

Flesh for Frankenstein:
I don't like movies of this exaggerated genre. But the 3D is excellent. Great restoration of the 3-D film Archive both in depth and in the projected image in fantastic definition. Rating Film:7

Wonder Woman: An average movie with a good 3D especially in the moments when the protagonist uses her powers and the rope. Beautiful combat scenes.
Rating Film:7,5

GvK: A great Monster Verse movie! With a 3D inferior to Kong Skull Island, however, with fantastic combat scenes in 3D! The rest of the film had little
depth. Rating Film: 8

Dune: What a great movie with great 3D usage in depth and excellent sharpness even in the darkest places. A very consistent 3D and doesn't tire the eyes. Missing images with things coming out of the screen. But overall a better 3D than Blade Runner 2049.
Rating Film: 8,8

Black Widow: Another beautiful 3D Marvel movie. The 3D scenes in IMAX are fabulous! The 3D of this movie is solid from start to finish with great depth and various off-screen effects.
Rating Film: 7,8

Shang-Chi: Marvel being Marvel. A film with excellent depth, but could use more of the effects that make objects project off-screen. The action scenes were great! But I wanted to see the rings more projected towards the viewer. Rating Film: 8

Jumanji: Next Level. A fun movie with consistent 3D like the first movie. Plenty of brightness and good depth with a few moments of objects coming off the screen. Rating Film: 7.6

Monster Hunter:
Good 3D entertainment. It has an average 3D and at times quite prominent. Grade Film: 7.1

Note for 3D level: What will define the winner
Bigfoot Family :8.5/10
Croods 2: 8.5/10
Flesh for Frankenstein 9/10 (The best 3D in my opinion in 2021)
WW84: 8/10
GvK: 8.2/10 (if the 3D were all the same as the fight scenes, the rating would certainly be better).
DUNE: 8.4/10
Black Widow: 8.6/10 (IMAX
Shang-Chi: 8.3/10 (if the 3D was all similar to the displayed depth, it would win!)
Jumanji 2: 8/10
Monster Hunter: 7.8/10

1- Flesh for Frankenstein 9/10 (Winner)
2- Black Widow 8.6/10
3- Bigfoot family and Croods 2 8.5/10
5- DUNE 8.4/10
6- Shang-Chi 8.3/10
7- GvK 8.2/10
8- Jumanji 2 and WW84 8/10
10- Monster Hunter 7,8/10

Great assessment. I agree here. Frankenstein had the strongest 3D levels to my eye, which made it fun to watch, but the most enjoyable 3D movies for me were Shang-Chi, Jumanji Next Level, Dune, and WW84 (amazing full screen opening sequence, wish the whole movie had 3D like that). I was so disappointed by the lack luster 3D in GvK. Had it been more on par with Skull Island, it would have been a 10 for me. A huge monster movie is the perfect vehicle for gratuitous gorgeous over the top 3D in my opinion!
I need to rewatch Black Window, but was glad to have picked it up even at the Japanese price. I recall this being medium 3D with some stronger enjoyable 3D sequences. I'm still waiting on my copy of Bigfoot Family, but really looking forward to it after getting a sense of the strong NuWave 3D in my initial test of Son of Bigfoot recently (still need to finish this one).

Wow, not much love for WINGS OF THE HAWK?

Unfortunately, that does not bode well for any additional westerns on 3-D Blu-ray!

Loved the 3D Bob but the Technicolor elements didn’t survive as well as TAZA SON OF COCHISE.

I'm not your usual viewer since I watch 3D in VR and Wings of the Hawk looks down right horrible in VR. Many VR lenses have screen door effect issues and this film takes full (dis)advantage of that to become almost unwatchable.

It might be the penultimate nail in the coffin for me purchasing any more classics I'm afraid. I'm happy enough with House of Wax, Mad Magician, It came from Outerspace and Creature from the Black Lagoon but I might notl be buying any more "classics" going forward.

Wings of the Hawk looked great to me but it had a lot of competition this year so it's not surprising it didn't top many lists. It's also not as well known as something like Hondo which is probably the 3D western that would sell the best (though naturally there isn't one I wouldn't buy).

Which VR model do you use?

The original Quest because I prefer to have the contrast ratio and black levels of the OLED lenses. There are a couple of films with scenes that still show the screen door effect but overall I think I have mitigated a lot of the effect and what remains my brain has gotten used to. But Wings of the Hawk literally looks like someone has run a cheese grater over the film stock.

The question is how did it fare against other classics in sales, not a poll against every modern movie on this particular forum. I still haven't watched it yet along with several others on the list. I watched Flesh for its notoriety but Shogun and Wings haven't made it out of the shrink wrap yet but I'm sure the 3D in all three are tops on this list. I don't love westerns but I'll buy them all if they are in 3D.

hint:

Hondo

I admittedly haven't gotten around to seeing or even own many of the features in this list. But from what I did see, Wings of the Hawk wins for most impressive 3D. I was watching on an LG 55" OLED (E6P). Lots of luscious volume to the cinematography, particularly at the gold mining operation running down the hillside. I also found the movie quite enjoyable. As someone inexperienced with Westerns, it makes a refreshing change from other, more popular genres of today. There is something quite wonderful about the look of all of these 50's 3D features, isn't there? So WotH gets my vote!

How do you find the 3D in VR on a technical level? I find the depth is not as apparent as my projector but the pop out is just as good. Presumably with the screen being so close to my eyes.

Like you say, it’s a shame that the resolution is so low but I haven’t found anything unwatchable, just a come down from a projector or large OLED.

(I’m using PSVR by the way)

I am getting a little more depth since I made the changes for Shang-chi. I do wonder if the depth could maybe be a little deeper but I have nothing to compare it with. I have different screens at different distances so I don't "think" I have a viewing distance issue. How does this work on the PSVR? At 1440x1600 per eye Resolution isn't a major issue for the Quest never mind the Quest 2. It is high enough to make very little difference to the actual viewing experience. If you wish to continue this conversation just quote me on the 3D VR thread in Hardware

Yeah, it's still in the running for me. The only ones of those that I've watched at home are Dynasty and Flesh, but I own them all minus the toons. I'll have to put off voting for a while but my winner will most likely be a vintage title. That iS If the vote is for the best 3D and not just favorite movie
