Default Great little article from IMDB.com

Blu-ray May Be Coming Into Its Own

30 July 2009 1:04 PM, PDT

After accounting for only a small sliver of home video sales since it won the high-definition video war with HD DVD, Blu-ray Disc is finally beginning to show some real clout in the video store. Home Media magazine observes that 36 percent of total unit sales of Watchmen, which debuted at the top of the sales and rental charts last week, could be attributed to Blu-ray Disc sales. The trade publication observed that the results demonstrate that "the format is fast moving out of the early adopter phase and into the mainstream." The stop-action animated film Coraline finished in second place with 18 percent of its sales coming from Blu-ray. The 3D film is packaged with four sets of 3D glasses.

Great news.

We're on our way to being mainstream boys!

Bring on Transformers 2, Star Trek, and Lord of the Rings to help sell some serious amounts of players

i think the day after thanksgiving this year will be a huge blu-ray season.

i'm hoping for a couple players around the $100 mark or some blu's around $5, i may have to venture out and grab one for my shop in the basement or build my collection up.

IMO blu is already mainstraim, sure it isn't #1 over DVD but I don' think it has to be to be considered mainstraim.

I have been noticing that the Blu-Ray sections are getting bigger and bigger in the stores. The Target by me has tripled the size of the section since January.

$100 and down will definitely move a lot of players, I think they will have some that low this year on Black Friday, and more that are like $150 or so. It'll be interesting when the sales numbers come out.

I'll be doing my part as far as the movies go

If the only identifiers are "mainstream" or "niche", I'd say that it's definitely mainstream.

Actually, ever since they've been putting BD in advertisements on TV along with the DVD release, I'd say it's been mainstream.

Just a matter of time before retailer start giving more shelf space to Blu-ray disc and start cutting down on the DVD space.

I agree. This holiday season will be huge for the BD format.

Now if the studios would put out more 7.1 audio and director's cuts and extended versions more people would bite I believe. Then once quality 2.0 players under $100 emerge....this will EXPLODE!......

Indeed. It has been well beyond "niche" for a long time.

Yep, this is going to be one sweet holiday season. I am grabbing a lot of imports around that time but will hopefully be getting some other great flicks at low prices, as well.

Let's hope the retailers don't completely screw up the momentum and give us some great sales starting in November. The last few years has been really disappointing when it came to blu-ray sales around this time.

It is good news. Considering players are dropping fast in price is a huge factor. Most people will make the jump if they can get one under $200. It is well worth the extra few bucks for the discs sometimes too.

I love watching the transition on TV ads from "Now on DVD" to "Now on DVD and blu-ray" to "Now on blu-ray and DVD" to "Now on blu-ray."

I can't wait for the day that Blu-Ray replaces all DVDs. I'm sick of being the only person I know who has a BD Player.

Now on VHS
Now on VHS and DVD
Now on DVD and HD DVD
Now on DVD and HD DVD and blu-ray and UMD
Now on DVD and blu-ray
I don't mind DVD that much, I just wish people who have the means to upgrade would do so, especially those with huge HD TVs who settle for DVD.
