Wow, quite a number of solid rentals or purchases on there. Quite pleased with this list as it is sure to be just a fraction of their titles. Can't wait to see what interesting titles we get with new Warner/NL budget waves. I want the rest of the New Line F13 flicks, and perhaps Mortal Kombat.

I keep hoping they'll announce more of their classic titles from the 1970's but they seem to be ignoring that era at the moment. When are we going to get BDs of films such as 'All The President's Men', 'Klute', 'McCabe & Mrs Miller', 'Badlands', 'Barry Lyndon', 'Network', 'The Wind And The Lion', 'The Man Who Would Be King', 'Mean Streets' and 'Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore'? |

And, yes, I know 2001 wasn't filmed in true Cinerama. Rather than a 2001 UCE, I wish WHV would release a set of Kubrick on blu-ray - they still own more of his movies than any other studio. |

I would buy 2001 again if it was a new transfer. Anything else I don't need. I love too many movies to buy trinkets.
I'm pretty excited about seeing an entire schedule for 2010 from any studio. I like how classics-heavy this list is, and assume most of the modern releases get added in as time goes by ( ![]() Also, I'm worried: No Ben Hur! |

[QUOTE=BluBonnet;2438350]The only thing that could make it even remotely worthwhile, imho, would be to add a "smilebox" version to it, like they did with How the West Was Won, to simulate the way it looked in a curved screen
QUOTE] "What Aristotle meant by the Object of Sight was the Arc of Vision" -- Paul Goodman IMO, the many, many 70 mm curved screen and Cinerama movies I've seen didn't quite look like the shape of Smilebox, which probably simulates the shape you would get if you were sitting on a ladder directly in line with the center of the screen top to bottom and side to side. From most seats, the curve of the top of the screen appears to be different than the curve of the bottom, and more importantly, the screen is so big, and the curve so palatable, that you tend to lose awareness of it after a short time -- after that, you are just "in the picture," as the advertizing used to say. This was part of the original intention ... to suggest the arc of vision in a most natural way, and the arc of vision is how we are used to seeing. In a widescreen film, the director is in charge of moving our heads and eyeballs. I think having a moderately curved screen in the home would be a better choice than Smilebox. We did that with a homemade screen in my former house, and we are about to in our current one. In the old house we were able to get the right and left edges out 5" from the plane, over a 10 foot expanse, without losing focus or causing one side of the screen to reflect on the other. That tiny curve actually increased the feeling of immersion! With "constant height" and the wider images just reaching farther toward the sides, shapes of all aspect ratios looked good, as did 8 & 16 mm movies and 35 mm slides. 2001, was, as you say, not in three panel Cinerama, and was filmed in 70 mm, but it was projected on fairly recently installed versions of Cinerama's patented "vertically oriented venetian blinds" screens. The aspect ratio was 2.2:1, milder and better, IMO, than Cinerama's extreme AR. Yet Cinerama corp. got their name on the bilboards, thanks to providing the screens (also used for the 70 mm releases of Grand Prix and The Halleluja Trail). In some cities It's a Mad, Mad World, and The Greatest Story Ever Told used the original Cinerama screen, and the old Cinererama aspect ratio, having been filmed in Ultra (as opposed to Super) Panavision 70. Super (2.20:!) is much more natural to look at, and helps in the suspension of disbelief, IMO. 2001 was filmed in Super. The most deeply curved screens were the ones made by Cinerama Corp, whether for three panel or 70 mm, and the early 70 mm Todd-AO screens. Last edited by garyrc; 10-28-2009 at 06:44 AM.
