![]() ![]() The Third Man Blu-ray The Third Man Blu-ray Review Criterion has confirmed they no longer own the rights to this classic movie from 1949 anymore, so whatever stock is out there in the world is it for the Criterion Blu-ray. Once Criterion titles go out of print, they usually command a premium on the secondary used market once new copies are completely sold out. I have already made my order at Amazon, who has the best pricing currently. There is some discussion of this topic in the Criterion thread but thought a separate post might alert forum readers who do not regularly check that thread. Out of curiosity what is the appeal of criterion when it comes to blu-ray, i always regarded them as putting out very fine dvd's because at that time quality was not normally a concern with other companies releases, but in the blu arena what do they bring to the table other then the titles they have rights to?

1. A film by the "big-named" directors in their collection (Bergman, Godard, Fellini, Tati, Truffaut, Polanski, Kurosawa, etc.) Though don't know why they have 2 Truffaut and Wenders. Weird. 2. They have a IFC deal, so you're going to see newer films. (Che, Gomorrah, etc.) Those are pretty much the 2 things that they are using to determine the blu-rays they put out right now. They are spreading it around right now for $. Give it another year, and you will start seeing more into their collection. They appeal as they did in dvd, laserdiscs, etc, so I don't see any difference other than improving everytime. Last edited by SpiderBaby; 10-27-2009 at 05:00 AM. |
